Description

Mantha was traded for Vrana, Panik, a 1st and 2nd. I view this deal as a comp to any potential kubalik trade. Keep in mind that Mantha also battles injuries two years in a row before the trade that kubalik did not. Since kubalik came to the NHL lkater in his career, I will comp their stats not taking into account Mantha's first 2 years in the league, which were his two most unproductive years anyways

Mantha:

4 years 193 GP, 76 goals, 79 assists, 155 points
0.8 points per game and 0.39 goals per game

Kubalik:
Age when traded: 26
2 years 124 GP, 46 goals, 38 assits, 84 points
0.68 points per game, 0.37 goals per game

Mantha has kubalik beat in terms of production narrowly, however there is also negative value in Mantha's injury risk. Trade values should be similar in my opinion

Yup, all good. Leafs will have a hard enough time resigning Kase let alone Kubalik. With minimal cap incresases till 2026, Toronto will need rookies on ELC that can come in and produce

Mantha trade is not a good base, that trade was really odd in general. Also Kubalik would be the Vrana in any such deal since he's the young pendingi RFA and not the already locked up prime winger

I think one thing to remember here is that Panik was a 3 by 3 mil cap dump that was probably the value of the 1st. “Upgrading” from Vrana to Matha was probably about a 2nd.

That said, Kubalik should absolutely get a 1st, and probably a B prospect.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Mantha was a pending RFA when he was traded. And kubalik is the same age now as mantha was last year. And Kubalik's production is more comparable to mantha's than vrana's (pre trade)

From NJD, the expectation is that Sharangovich's production would be similar to Kubalik's over the long-run, i.e., 25g winger (I don't think NJD plans to move him back to center).
So probably a pass here.

4 year track record > 2 year track record. There's also the size factor, with most GMs loving giant forwards that can score.

And the fact, like Ledge & Dairy pointed out, Mantha had signed a 4 yr deal prior to the move.

Not a great comparable.

Is Kubalik a 6'5, 235 lb. power forward? You can't just use production to compare players.

As for the Edmonton trade, Yamamoto is younger, cheaper and under team control for longer - and actually has outperformed Kubalik at 5v5 over the past 2+ seasons, 0.45 P/GP vs 0.42 P/GP. No way you get him AND a first AND a second.

While I personally think calling Mantha a power forward is a bit of a stretch (yes he's big, but he plays a very soft game), I would agree that Yamo + 1 + 2 is an overpay. For the Oilers, I'd counter with Lavoie, Turris, 1st and conditional 3rd. Really think Kubalik could fit well on the team as a sniper next to some of their elite passers.

Teams like Leafs, Oilers just don't have the cap to make a trade and signing like this without getting rid of equal cap.
New Jersey and Ottawa will have cap next year but maybe they are better off keeping those young assets, spending money on a good UFA then trading for Kubalik type player.
The Hawks made a foolish trade for Jones, giving up assests and then overpaying him on extension. Can't see other teams making the same mistake.

I’m glad this is explored. Hawks should definitely keep Kubalik. They best deal is Dominik Bokk and Bean imo.
And tbh the CAR option should be the only option. Kubalik is a guaranteed stud scoring winger and hawks have only Kane and Debrincat in that category.

Edmonton is laughable in my opinion thought Yamamoto and Turris is a body easily replaced by many already on the roster.
