Detroit doesn't want Dermott for free. He's a defensive nightmare and his offensive upside isn't worth his liability defensively. We'll take the pick for the retention, you keep Dermott.

He’s better defensively than offensively. He really isn’t that bad of a third pairing d man but I agree no need for him in detroit

Crazy that people still think Kessel has actual value.

I don't watch all 82, but I usually end up catching at least 20 Leafs games a year and have seen them in the playoffs a lot over the last few years and it seems like EVERY single game I've seen him in, I notice him for all the wrong reasons. He gets way too cute in his own zone, pinches at weird times and is ineffective with stick checks. I'm not saying he's good offensively, I'm just saying the intrigue of his skating ability MAYBE generating offense is the only positive I've seen to him, and it just seems like unrealized potential that he's never going to figure out, to me. He reminds me very much of Brett Lebda.

He can get wandering in his own end time from time, and can make that big mistake now and then.

But he's always done quite well in 3rd pair minutes, no matter who he's playing with. His main strength is zone entry defence, he skates well, moves the puck well.

His biggest fault is he hasn't proven he can handle tougher competition consistently.

But he's a perfectly capable 15 min per night 3rd pair guy.

Seeing as the Leafs are still paying retention, is there any rule against acquiring that player again? Would kind of be hilarious to me if that happened given we still have part of his cap hit.

Don't know for sure, but I don't think there's a rule against it.

Ah yes, one bad play should define who a player is as a whole

It's NOT an isolated incident. He makes poor decisions all the time

He's also excellent at denying zone entries and moving the puck up the ice, he's pretty crafty which can lead to him making turnovers, but its not like he's a turnover machine, guys like Rielly, Chabot and Petry all average more turnover/60 minutes than he does, but nobody ever talks about them making bad decisions.

They make bad decisions too. The difference is, they offset it with a lot more offense. It doesn't excuse the poor decisions, but does make them easier to live with.
