Description
The right thing to do is trade 87, but unfortunately Sid is too loyal and won’t let that happen. So Hextall better get this right when he retools.

Sell and go nuts in FA and off-season trade market.

This isn't a retool, this is a rebuild. It would be dumb to rebuild during Sid's final years, and no, trading him will never be the right idea.

Most of these teams brusquely decline and ask that you never call back. You are expecting waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much.

Top much of a return for ageing one year rentals

Even if they re-sign it's not ideal

Confused

Sure but they're just average at best in terms of D and if they upgrade that they turn into COL, VGK, etc. Which they should. Hellebuyk prime is so precious.

If they're not contending and are out of contention by the trade deadline then why not rebuild? Malkin and Letang are going to walk for free in free agency, so unless your sure you have a great change to win a cup the best bet is to trade them for value back instead of letting them walk for nothing.

On what planet does any team give up a top d prospect and a 2nd for a 36yo pending UFA. You’d be lucky to get just the 2nd not a premium prospect.

Look at cap space, you go sign and trade for players in offseason and retool in 1 year. You have prospects and picks to trade if needed.

This was just supposed to be re: rebuild

Which way? Look at rentals in the past and what they got in return. Has there ever been a rental like Malkin? Also Florida is most likely where he signs if he isn’t back in Pitt.

Plus Florida has Bobrovsky for years whether he plays good or bad so.

Look what he got last year and for what production? production has tripled. Maybe you get slightly less than what’s there but not much.

Because Crosby. Rebuild means Crosby is gone too. Retool if Crosby stays.

Disagree. This makes them way better. They don’t have offensive dman. If they think they can win they do trade Perfetti.

I don’t think you realize that players of Malkin and Letangs status, experience and skill do not become available very often. If they become available teams will be wllling to pay A LOT to get them. Their age is not a concern as they both are still elite players.

Pionk? Also Morrissey and Schmidt are having great bounce back years. We’re fine without him and definitely won’t trade our best prospect for a declining defencemen

There isn’t a 36yo pending UFA that Avs give up Barron for on the planet. That is just delusional he is an A prospect. A 2nd very possibly but literally befor the Pens could say “Justin..” Sakic would be hard no.

Hasn't he said he'll only play in Pittsburgh or Florida, where his wife lives? If so, that brings his value down. The only reason guys like Foligno netted a return they did was because of a bidding war. That won't happen with Malkin who has a NMC.

Besides, it's a false narrative that suddenly every rental would be worth the moon. That's solely because of idiot GMs and the fact that we all just remember the bad trades. No sane person would overpay for 3 months of someone's services.

Taylor Hall didn't net even a 1st and Matt Duchene, who was playing like a #1 center at the time, only got a late 1st and a couple of B-prospects. The idea that Malkin, who hasn't even played a game this season, would cost the best goaltender prospect in the world is just absurd.

It dosen't 100% mean that Crosby is done. His contract isn't up soon, Malkin and Letang's are. If the window is closing, which it is we have to do what is best for the team long term, and getting value for those two instead of letting them walk for free is whats best. They're going to be gone in free agency, even though I don't like it. Malkin and especially Letang could get more then we could pay. We could literally even trade them at the deadline if we're out of contention, get some first round picks, and then get them back in free agency if thats really what we want to do. But we'd be foolish not to get value for them at the deadline if were out of the playoff picture.
