Age and type of _FA status should be more key here

Kubalik > Klingberg for those reasons etc.

Why does Hertl get Amirov but Filip not

kubalik would be cause he's a rfa, but there's going to be a war for klingberg, less so for kubs.
same logic for hertl getting amirov.

Both CHI deals are really non starters. The values are well short of what would be needed to convince us to move any of the pieces mentioned.

Like the idea of getting Dylan Strome and Alex Nylander on the Leafs.

Forsberg and Fabbri also are good options.

This might be bad take but I'm going to argue that the Leafs shouldn't make any trades at the deadline this year. Trading for a rental every year eventually depletes draft pick and prospect pool. With so many first round exits in the playoffs, the rental players aren't the missing piece in my opinion. I think Dubas needs to address the team and basically lay it out and say, this is the team. Now show up.
While I know the team is in win now mode, Dubas is also tasked with figuring out how to adjust the teams long term plans with the variable of a flat cap for 2 years. When he signed the big 4 contracts, it was with the mindset that those cap hits wouldn't look so bad around this year and forward.

what would you consider as a counter-deal?
i'd say the leafs only untouchables are probably robertson, and MAYBE niemela.

When he signed the big 4 contracts, it was with the mindset that those cap hits wouldn't look so bad around this year and forward.

not a bad take by any means, but i'd respectfully disagree. while you are correct, rentals do deplete the farm system, i think that dubas & co have seen they need to address a pretty major problem: finishing talent.
so yes, i agree that the leafs shouldn't go after someone simply because he's available: and for that reason, klingberg makes no sense. they should, as you've said, let the team just go, as they've built it: their defense (i still think holl needs to go, or maybe be a 7d) is actually decently strong. klingberg, while a fantastic player, is not needed.

however their finishing ability is staggeringly awful. a player like forsberg or kubalik could help this. even strome & a nylander are better finishers than a lot of the leafs. i don't think the leafs should chase too far: if the bidding war gets too high (pavelski, even forsberg maybe) they should bow out. but they need to address this problem.

they also need to address depth and secondary scoring. so far, only kase is dependable (and even then, barely) to contribute. alex nylander & tyler motte would be great depth options, as would someone like fabbri or even kubalik (he would come in to push down either bunting or kerfoot and give depth scoring there).

in conclusion, i don't think the leafs should push too far, and they shouldn't simply go for the big fish because it's right there. but if the opportunity is there, and the fit works, and the price is decent so that it doesn't destroy the prospect or draft pool, then they should do it.

Like the idea of getting Dylan Strome and Alex Nylander on the Leafs.

Forsberg and Fabbri also are good options.

dylan and marner have history together. could be enticing. and nylander is a good depth scorer, and could even slot in at wing next to his brother.

what would you consider as a counter-deal?
i'd say the leafs only untouchables are probably robertson, and MAYBE niemela.

TBH, theres probably not much by way of deal that either party would be agreeable to. Strome is playing again under the new coach and has looked much improved so a deal would need to consist of a quality player. I like Kerfoot but the salary commitments are a put off. Would prefer a prospect but the only few we would have interest in, you would probably want to deal for different players i.e. Sandin, Amirov....

Nylander is having a year to build up confidence and Fitness tho could be tempted with a 2nd round pick I imagine.

Kuba would require a good payment. He is a quality goal threat in the league and would need a 1st involved or a quality prospect and in all likelihood both for us to part with him.

All 3 are RFA so we have control over their next deals which gives more value to them and more leverage to us.

would a 2nd, a 3rd, Holl, and SDA/Abramov be of interest in exchange for both strome and nylander?

No it wouldn't interest us to move both of them. None of the players mentioned above really do much for us and the picks are likely going to be late in the round. This is not a deal the fanbase would be happy with.

on top of the deal proposed? what about him in place of amirov or SDA?

No the value is fair. I just meant it would have to be changed around to work Liljegren in the deal as we have no RHD after Klinger. I’d love Liljegren, Amirov, and a first but feel like that may be a little greedy if we’re selling him as a rental. Maybe not. Depends on the demand I suppose

i'd probably do liljegren and amirov for klingberg if that's of interest?

liljegren is nhl-ready which is why the leafs value him more, i'd think.

I’d push for at least a second round pick on top of those two. Liljegren not looking out of place in the NHL def helps his value
