obviously this isn't still valid but there are some things that stick: his insane hockey IQ, his shot is still pretty lethal (and the leafs could use some finishing ability right now), and his drive is quite infecting. and he's 5'6. sounds like the dubas type.

also he played for the north dakota sioux. sure its not dubas' soo, but it's some soo, right? that has to mean something?

is this overdoing it? i think the leafs should target grimaldi now and motte soon, to see how badly we need a kubalik. forsberg is another good (likely slightly more expensive) option but that might be definitely overdoing it. this gives the a depth scoring line (spezza + motte + grimaldi/kerfoot) and a good shutdown line (kampf ++) while also keeping the cap manageable.

if the leafs feel this is overdoing it, kerfoot/grimaldi can play 2nd line, while the other takes the kampf line.

if mikheyev returns, put him on the 4th line (or trade him) and don't trade for kubalik.

the leafs also still have plenty of good options if someone goes down. simmonds is certainly an nhl player, and anderson & semyonov are more than capable of stepping in. pateryn is a solid 7d, and rubins and menell seem to be, also, more than capable of playing.
