Could Shane Wright could end up in Columbus as part of Seth Jones deal

Description
Read the 2022 pick condition on the trade: "*Conditions: If Chicago wins one of the the 2022 draft lotteries, the pick becomes their 2023 1st round pick"

The lottery rules change this year in that the maximum a team can jump is 10 spots. What if Chicago finishes dead last and two teams ranked between #12 and #16 win the lotteries?

Shane Wright --> Columbus

---------

Example

Imagine the final standings (in reverse order for 2022 draft)

1. Chicago
2. Arizona
3. Montreal
4. Ottawa
5. Seattle
6. Dallas
7. Vancouver
8. Pittsburgh
9. Detroit
10. Los Angeles
11. Nashville
12. Colorado
13. Anaheim
14. San Jose
15. Vegas
16. New Jersey

(actual teams don't matter...a lot of these are unlikely as final)

At the Lottery, San Jose wins the first lottery and jumps to pick #4. Colorado wins the second lottery and jumps to pick #2.

Here is the final draft order:

1. Columbus (via Chicago)
2. Arizona (via Colorado)
3. Arizona
4. San Jose
5. Montreal (pick is in top-10, so Arizona gets the Carolina pick)
6. Ottawa
7. Seattle
8. Dallas
9. Vancouver
10. Pittsburgh
11. Detroit
12. Los Angeles
13. Nashville
14. Anaheim
15. Vegas
16. New Jersey

---------

If I am reading that wrong, somebody say so.
But would certainly be an interesting scenario.

You do win the lottery; the lottery by definition is the lottery. No team can can't get any picks without the lottery taking place.

Lol, Chicago doesn't win the lottery in this scenario, the 2 teams that move up win the lottery

    It's top 2 protected.

Capfriendly misunderstood the condition and needs a rewrite.

NHL.com article: "If Chicago's first-round pick in 2022 is one of the top two selections, the Blue Jackets will receive the Blackhawks' first-round pick in 2023."

NBC Chicago: "The Blackhawks made sure to protect the 2022 first-round draft pick by making it lottery protected. If the pick falls inside the Top 2, the selection will belong to Chicago and the first-rounder that goes to Columbus will be in 2023."

Fourth Period: "The Columbus Blue Jackets have traded defenceman Seth Jones, the 32nd overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft and a 2022 sixth-round draft pick to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for defenceman Adam Boqvist, the 12th overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, a 2021 second-round pick and a top-two lottery protected 2022 first-round pick — if the pick falls within the top-two, it will move to 2023."

The Atheltic: "If Chicago's 2022 first rounder is in the top two, it becomes a 2023 first-round pick."

TSN: "The 2022 first-round pick could become a 2023 first rounder instead if the selection is in the top two. "

CapFriendly: "Conditions: If Chicago wins one of the the 2022 draft lotteries, the pick becomes their 2023 1st round pick"

Wikipedia: "Columbus will receive a first-round pick in 2022 if Chicago does not win either of the two draws in the 2022 Draft Lottery. Otherwise the pick will defer to 2023."

Seems to be a lot of mixed reporting, but it sounds to me it very well could be top-2 protected and reporters were just using "lottery protected" as another way to describe. But I am still not 100% on that.

It's not totally dead, Colombus will still end up with a very solid pick in a pretty deep draft.

Wikipedia is crowd sourcing information and the crowd generally is half knowledeable about the subject...thus a terrible way to get finite facts. Only good for general knowledge on a subject, but not details.

    1. Columbus (via Chicago)
    2. Arizona (via Colorado)
    3. Arizona
    4. San Jose
    5. Montreal

I think to get #1 or #2 you technically have to win the lottery because finishing last is only an 18% chance.

    I don’t think it’s that bad…..

There r a few worse teams then CHI

ARI, BUF and MTL for example

It CHI doesn’t win the lotto their pick should be between 5-10

Even with the off ice issues their team just isn’t that bad

However, MTL will have Price and Edmundson back from injury... That's gonna be a big boost for the Dcore

The standings only increase your chance of winning the lottery, finishing last does not mean you don't win if you get #1, just means you have a higher chance...I think so

Kind of....but some of the articles use both "top-2 protected" and "lottery protected"
I'm guessing its the former. And when used interchangeably with latter, it mislead secondary sources.

If a team finishes between #12-16, they will be eligible for draft lottery, but cannot move up more than 10 spots.

I dont disagree with you point ,its Valid
Your grasp on our language on the other hand is haggered.

"the lottery is the lottery by definition". . . No its not
You cannot Define a word using that word again(certainly cant using it 3 times in 20 words)

Re-write it so you sound as intelligent as your point is capable of being.
Otherwise People have to ignore the source as they cant even define basic words properly

Kind of....but some of the articles use both "top-2 protected" and "lottery protected"
I'm guessing its the former. And when used interchangeably with latter, it mislead secondary sources.

The person who writes each article is sometimes his own editor.

When in doubt, defer to the NHL.

I think it's pretty self explanatory the definition of lottery, but I'll bite

Definition of "Lottery" = a process or thing whose success or outcome is governed by chance

It is a singular process in the NHL not multiple processes or systems and the first 15 picks are governed by the process period; there's no debate to it.

If a team finishes between #12-16, they will be eligible for draft lottery, but cannot move up more than 10 spots.

See changes in system here: https://www.nhl.com/news/nhl-draft-lottery-changes-announced-for-2021/c-322838154

Correct which means they will include the lottery balls for spots #11 onward after the 1st pick is chosen then add the #11 team ball, then after the 2nd pick is drawn add the #12 team ball, etc.

I found another trade where a condition on a draft pick needs to be rewritten on this site.

Can you spot the difference between the two interpretations?
