The only reason we're thinking Chiraot is worth this is because TB paid that for Savard. Its not the true value of players. It was very specific. If a team thinks Chiarot is the missing piece, maybe we get lucky but I doubt it. Remember TB also paid a 1st for Coleman and a 1st for Goodrow (other stuff in the deal also obviously). MOST teams won't pay these high costs so don't expect us to get it.

However I fully expect if the Habs retain 50% to get a 2nd and a 3rd or prospect at the TDL. I think that's a very realistic return for him.

Chiarot at $1.75mm easily fetches north of a first round pick. I doubt though that Bergevin is going to need to retain though. At least 5-6 playoff contenders have exactly this type of need.

They are also getting a extension with him out of it that increases the value of the trade pretty decently. Looking at the upcoming UFA pool he is probably the best dman in the very small "can play 20-22 mins a night but doesnt break the bank" group.

Based on what exactly? The Savard trade last year? Even if that's the case, that was one trade out how many where a 1st was trdaed for a dman who was much better than Chiarot.. Name another pending UFA dman of Savard/Chiarot skill that went for a 1st. I just went back to 2015 to find one and frankly that guy was better than Chiarot anyway in Andrej Sekera. Came off a 44 pt season, 23 mins a night. Chiarot had a good playoffs but was that more him or more Weber. I say Weber.

Believe me, I would love a 1st rounder coming to the Habs for Chiarot but I just don't think lighting will strike twice (Pun intended), in this case for the habs.
