Description
Csick posted retaining Connor Brown the other day. What would the leafs need to add to make this work? You gotta eat salary for us in Ritchie. But you get a solid RHD behind Zub. I love Holl. I truly think he will bounce back. But not as much as I love Brown lol.

I think it’s starts with a 1st and a B prospect without retention. With retention, would probably cost more

Leafs would need to add a 1st round pick.

But I can't see how we would covet either Ritchie or Holl unfortunately.

Holl is meh and Ritchie's worthless. You have a bottom-4 D-man and a cap dump bottom-6 wing here included for one of OTT's most prolific winger. There's no value in there, only close to $5M of dead cap. Which is something Sens have once already received from Leafs in Zaitsev.

If you need to dump these guys to make money for the trade, fine, but the part of value is missing here. OTT would likely maximize his value by retaining as cap space is not a problem for them, which would certainly increase his value.

Robertson+2022 1st. That's what I'd want if I retain half of Brown's salary and take in some needless cap dumps. Also that comes pretty close to what NJ got for Coleman, and with half retention their cap hit is exactly the same.

If Leafs were to suggest lowering the value of the trade by not having Sens retain any salary, I'd just decline and sell Brown elsewhere. Sens are bound to get a huge haul for him from any contender.

I agree. And that was the point of the post. Not just Ritchie and Holl for Brown. Not even Benning would do that trade. The point was to see what would need to be sent to acquire. Leafs need to dump salary to do it.

All you said was "what would the leafs need to add?" No the concept is flawed from the beginning, youve asked Ottawa to take on negative value contracts without paying them to do so then you are asking what needs to be added to get this valuable player as well. So basically the correct answer is scratch the original base offer and make a legitimate one

The only way an offer is possible is by shedding salary. Ottawa is a team who can absorb. So again, the point of the post is to see what would feasibly need to be added to generate interest. Thanks for coming out.

Certainly an underpay for Connor Brown. Lets's go back few years. Toronto boy Brown was a solid contributor and I imagine would have loved to play his NHL career with the Leafs. But Leafs management over paid there big three RFAs, so Brown had to traded for cap reasons (well kinda a sweetener to rid themselves of Zaitsev long term). I felt bad for Brown as his contribution to the Leafs was overshadowed by the "stars" at the pay window.

While true it isn’t necessarily the better asset management for Ottawa. You could do Holl plus picks prospect for Brown with 50% retained. In that case Ottawa pays 3.8 mil for Holl. Or you could take on Holl plus picks and prospect as well as Ritchie. Ritchie could still pan out, turn around and be flipped at 2023 deadline for more. In this case you pay 4.5 M for Ritchie and Holl… Ottawa isn’t a cap crunch team. Seems to be better asset management.

You also aren't taking into account LTIR and accrued cap space. I personally don't see Brown to Toronto as something realistic without a double retention though. a rental is more reasonable add

Let's start with the fact that OTT helping their most hated division rival automatically ups the price of Connor Brown, who they'd surely prefer to move to a western contender.
You're also asking them to take back two contracts they don't want, both of which carry into 22-23 and actually cost more than their cap hit. ($4.5M in cap, $5.3M in money.)
It would honestly cost you much more than you'd be willing to give up. What you suggested isn't even close to the best offer Ottawa would get.
