Boeser only 1.875M$ more than Dobson?

He'd have three 30 goal seasons under his belt

If not for injuries etc.

not one of those pieces aside from the first is actually all that valuable. i guess it depends on where vancouver’s first ends up being tho. if it’s top 10, in this draft i’d strongly consider it.

Interesting i would have thought Dobson's development would put him at a higher value than that.

i like dobson a lot, at least a lot more than trotz seems to, and i don’t think the package is great, but this draft is so stacked so a top-10 pick might be worthwhile. if it’s not top 10 i wouldn’t consider it at all.

Having a big mobile right side d man who is playing meaningful minutes at 20-21 yrs old should be highly highly coveted. There is no d prospect in the draft you would rather have because of the unpredictability of how dmen develop I would think. I'd give up a top 10 pick for Dobson for sure as a Canucks fan. Hes what we need.

I would only do it if a center with 1st line upside is on the board. Wouldn’t do It for a winger. But tbh I’m still very high on Dobson and think he’s still on a top pair all situations trajectory.

The thing with Trotz and Dobson is that he usually pairs Dobson will old defenseman who can’t move, when Dobson can’t cover for their mistakes he usually takes the blame. The kid is 21 YO and the past 3 years his D partners have been a 36 YO washed up Boychuk, Andy Greene, and Chara. Trotz put pelech, Pulock , and Toews in positions to succeed, not the case with Dobson.

i think my opinion is colored by what is (imo) barry’s misuse of his skillset. he’s fine defensively, but not great, and i think he’s forced by nature of our personnel to play with guys who can’t really move the puck to boost his offense or cover much for him defensively. he’s had a few possessions/games where he’s played with pelech and the puck movement was incredible, but they can’t play together bc no one else can move the puck at all. idk. he’s a weird case. it’s hard for me to judge whether he hasn’t been used properly or if he’s just not that good lol.

i’m with you 100%. would be great if he could play a bit with pelech but they just don’t have anyone to play with mayfield if that happens.

Unfortunately we do, a guy by the name of robin salo. Just trotz is too stubborn to sit chara.

Obviously small sample size,
Pelech-Dobson (10 min TOI) : 65% xGF% 2 GF

Dobson-Pulock (11 min TOI): 63 xGF% 1 GF

In Dobson’s 1st season as a 19 YO, his shot suppression metrics were impressive , he is forced to play a different game because of who he’s paired with. He didn’t forget how to play defense.

Seeing a lot of overreaction to Dobson’s play last night - this fanbase would hate most of the D from the 2018 draft because most of them don’t win hoard battles / aren’t proficient defensively. If you look at the defenseman from that draft , most of the highly touted D have been underwhelming at 5v5 over the last two seasons. Ty Smith, Dahlin, Boqvist , Hughes , K’andre Miller.

i agree. i think a big part of the problem is that trotz is trying to turn dobson into more of a defensive d-man instead of just letting him shine offensively and giving him a partner that'll complement those strengths. those other guys all have defensive deficiencies as well but the successful ones are given more freedom to wheel and deal offensively, and dobson isn't. he's in a perfect situation to make a hughes-tanev type of pairing with pelech which i think would make him better, but barry just hasn't done it due to personnel. maybe it's because the team is in "win-now" mode instead of trying to develop prospects, but making it easier for dobson to play well is the best way to win. he's far more talented than greene, mayfield and chara and brings much more to the table.

I could be wrong, but I don’t see it that way. I feel like Trotz is giving him a partner who is supposed to be a reliable stay at home type (neither Greene or Chara fit that mold at this point in their careers) so that Dobson can generate offense. The problem is Dobson’s D partners are bad at both ends of the ice and Dobson cannot be a one man show. Not many Dmen can.

I feel like Dobson’s biggest strength will be his defensive game, that’s what it was in juniors as well as being dominant in transition. He’s more of a two way D than a pure offensive defenseman.

Dobson needs to play with a D who can evade pressure and make a good 1st pass. Teams know that Greene/Chara aren’t capable of that so they just pressure Dobson. Not that much different from playing Komarov on Barzal’s line - During the Pittsburgh series the pens we’re doubling Barzal and playing “let Komarov beat us if he can” defense. They knew Komarov couldn’t enter the zone with possession or make a play to get a shot on goal.

I have proposed deals for Dobson + for Boeser and have been told almost unanimously no from Islander fans, I'm guessing he's pretty much untouchable.
