More Offensive 3C

Description
IF (big if) the Canucks are looking good at the deadline I think finding a relatively cheap 3C that is offensive should be a priority.

This would allow us to roll a shutdown line with Dickinson and give Pod and Garland more scoring opportunities. It would also be a big boost for our PP as PP2 has no centres.

Strome is an interesting option for Chicago as he definitely has potential and has show he can play but also seems to have fallen out of favour (maybe a new coach changes things).

A first is steep on paper but really its a mid 20's (keep in mind I'm assuming we're firmly in a playoff spot at the deadline) for a high 30's pick. I'm actually wondering if it's too little.

Other options could be Domi (expensive) or Getzlaf (inter-division, NMC). Anyone else have ideas for 3C's?

Neither would I. We brought in Dickinson to be our 3C. With offensive wingers, the third line can still produce offense (as shown today with a goal)

A late 1st for Strome and an early Second isn't too bad. That is if VAN finishes in the top of the standings. Would have to be a TDL move to be sure.

I think Strome fell out of favour last season because with 54% oZ starts he managed to give up 29 on-ice goals against whereas on-ice goals for were only 18. So although he puts up points he is just terrible at defence and the net result is not worth it. He only has 1 assist in 5 games so far this season.

Other suggestions? Not necessarily an offensive 3C...but if we are looking on track for the playoffs and Seattle are looking to be out of contention I would be tempted to trade for Jarnkrok. He is UFA next season so Seattle yield something for him as a rental before he walks. Proven playoff performer. Has been a bit slow with Seattle but a 30-point/season player previous 6 seasons. Plays any position. Plays PP and PK. Woudln't pay a 1st round pick for him tho...

I just want to free Strome at this point. CHI management has been playing games with this kid. I feel terrible for him. The only time they put him in a place to succeed was his 1st year where he scores 51 points in 58 games. It's true, he's not good defensively. But if you need to score and you need a PP center. He's really good at that.

It's only moving down about 10 spots on the draft. Not straight up giving up a first.

Also last night that line scored with Bo on the ice.

I like Dickinson but he is and always had been an Offensive black hole

I really think a lot of his shortcomings were mismanagement. If he could have at least one defensively responsible linemate and our D hadn't been so god awful under Colliton, he probably would've been looking at a shiny new $5-6mil contract this coming summer.

Come on, a late 1st for a very early 2nd...only moving back in the draft 5 to 10 spots...easily worth it but also why Chicago likely wouldn't accept.

He looked good last night that's for sure, so maybe with the coaching change he's going to not only be on the ice (clearly deserves that) but properly played. If that happens, we should see Strome go back to a .50ppg+ player that he is and either hold on to him or increase his trade value. I'm not entirely sold on Dach being a center at this point, although he's still a kid, but Strome as a future 2C especially if Dach doesn't develop into one and putting Dach on the wing is an interesting scenario.

I'm good with allowing Dach to play wing. The one thing that I find hard to understand (not suggesting you're doing this though) is people giving up on their young prospects so early. Not every prospect gets set up perfectly like Byram is right now. Whether than be Kaapo, Dach, or Lafreniere...it really does take time for players to develop. I'm happy with anything that gives Dach a ton of ice time. Doesn't matter to me whether he's a C or a RW.

Yes, definitely agree with that as well and do agree the jury is rightfully out on Dach being a 1C/2C that we hope for, but Strome under new coaching could be a great insurance policy. I know some fans like Borgstrom quite a bit and suggest he can replace Strome, I don't quite see it that way. Borgstrom to me, is a decent 3C but don't see the top 6 potential and think his value declines further up the lineup. Conversely, Strome is all top 6 and his value declines further down the lineup. What if Toews isn't re-signed after next season, what do the Hawks then have as top 6 centers? I just think Strome provides an insurance policy as such.

The only picks in the lottery are the 16 teams that don't make the playoffs. And the only lottery draws are for the first two picks. Which means without winning the lottery the other 14 teams can only move back 2 slots at most. All the teams that make the playoffs have their draft position locked. So if that was a TDL move, it would be so close to the end of the season anyway that the standings won't change much. Which would mean negotiation protections loses a lot of value. If you are a playoff team, you pretty much know your draft position by the TDL. Which I am assuming VAN will be a playoff team this year. They have a pretty baller roster right now!
