I love the whole "Not the solution" narrative. And no, I'm not saying that Colorado is the fit, mainly due to cap space, but there was this guy, back in 2015, who was the last super high profile winger that the Leafs had...He "wasn't the solution", was apparently "Lazy", wasn't a "winner", lacked "Grit", and definitely wasn't the type of player you win a cup with.
Now that player has a couple of Stanley cup rings that he won back to back after he was moved, all while scoring around a point per game, and the Leafs are left with: $1.2 mil/year in retention that they're still paying today, and Rodion Amirov, the mid 1st round pick that was acquired later. Nobody else.
Trading Marner would be exceptionally dumb, especially if it's for a pending UFA and a dman (who is good, but not the level of player that should be the only return with term that you're getting when you trade a player of Marner's caliber).
