Why would buffalo waste 2 retention spots for this?

The Canucks will be fine offensively, but they need to improve defensively. Some players would have to go to create cap space. I'm hoping the picks combined with the players would be enough for the Sabres to consider giving up 2 roster players and retain some salary.
Girgensons is a good 3rd/4th line centre and Hagg is a decent 5th/ 6th defenseman.
Bailey and Chiasson will likely be out of the lineup when Motte and Sutter are healthy, but perhaps Girgensons is better than Sutter.
The Canucks need some defense on the left side and as much as I like Rathbone he is the logical choice to move as they insisted on resigning Hughes.
Rathbone is the prize for Buffalo and Bailey goes home.
The Canucks can't afford to have Chiasson or any other player just for power plays (6-8 minutes/game).
I think Horvat, Miller and Podkolzin and perhaps even Myers would be at least as effective in front of the net.

i don't mind the pick ups, but i think just rathbone alone would be an overpayment and Buffalo has a stacked left side anyway

Can you make an offer for just Hagg.
Buffalo has a few LHD in the pipeline, and while he has played well, there are better options on the way.
