You’re too one dimensional evaluating the trade value of Hertl and Dvorak by only basing them off player value. Dvorak had one of the best contracts in the NHL and is under contract long-term. Hertl meanwhile is on an expiring deal for the Sharks and is most likely not coming back unless San Jose remains a playoff contender.
Please give me a player on an expiring contract who netted a better return than the one I proposed. Not even Mark Stone netted 75% of my package.
Gotta give credit where credit is due...my initial thought was that SJS will want more (of course they will)...the Dvorak comp doesn't really convince me- but the Stone comp is pretty convincing. Add to that a Sharks fan who thinks they should get more...and based on your Stone comp- NYR might actually be offering too much...so maybe this is a decent deal after all!
NYR gain a top 6 C while losing a headache...while the SJS get a 1st in a deep draft and take a chance on a player who could be a star or that they can turn over by the draft for minimally a 2nd...plus another lottery ticket and a roster filler who still may have some upside- especially if he plays w/ Karlson or Burns. Good job!!
BTW...there would be cap concerns- but there would be other moves following this to address this situation....that's an argument for another day.
