Rielly is a solid defenseman, 1st and a kicker is too little, Rasmus Ristolainen got a 1st and 2nd, and Rielly is miles better than Risto

Even then, Rielly is still worth a 1st and a top prospect, or close to that

At this point in this core's time, we should have been talking about trying to get to/past the 3rd round but here we are still waiting for a 1st round win.

No.
1. Time of year matters. Players have more value around free agency and the draft due to fewer cap restrictions.
2. That risto trade stunk for philly.
3. Rielly hasn’t played well the last few years. This isn’t the 72 point d man you’re thinking of.

Maybe a 1st from contending team (late 1st rounder) plus B-level prospect. Some examples,

NYI - 2023 1st and Kiefer Bellows

I think the 1st would have some degree of lottery protection (even from a contender, especially if it's a 2023 pick - I think GMs are finally going to learn from the mistakes of teams like SJ and CHI), but yeah these would be reasonable deadline returns for Rielly.
