It's debatable but Rossi will still be a very good player. At least you weren't Buffalo passing up both for Jack Friggen Quinn.

I think several teams will be kicking themselves on passing on Lundell. Could just be really bullish on him, but I think he’s gonna be great.

Especially Nashville, they could have really used a talent like him at center but they took Askarov even though they had Saros. Of course I don't think they knew Saros would suddenly turn into a vezina-caliber goalie though.

If Perfetti hadn’t fallen into the jets lap I wanted them to take lundell. He’s great, and I’m sure there are plenty of teams that are upset they passed. Like Buffalo taking Quinn.

Going into the draft Lundell is who I wanted too. But that was strictly because I never thought we'd have a shot in hell at getting Rossi where we were slotted.

I've always liked Lundell, he had the best faceoff skills out of any center prospect coming out of the draft that year. Which is something that I knew we needed badly with Koivu on his way off the roster.

But do you know who had the 2nd best faceoff skills in that draft?

Rossi.

Lundell has shot up many people list after the draft, but Rossi is easily the better and more skilled center long term. And look, I get that you have made it abundantly clear you hate smaller players in the past. But **** happens and you just have to get over it, because it is far too damn early to be moaning about certain prospects this early into their careers. They're not even into their primes yet.

If I could redraft, I still take Rossi 1,000,000/1,000,000 times there over Lundell everytime.

To be honest, if Rossi hadn't just been gift-wrapped by Buffalo with the prettiest of little bows and a card that said "Best wishes and warmest regards, Adams xoxo". I think we take Lundell or Perfetti there. It's not a guarantee that Lundell makes it to you at 10th ova.

But yeah, I agree.

yikes, quinn leads the ahl in goals right now and is ppg... late bloomer but will be an elite scorer in the league.

I don't know if I've ever been more wrong about a prospect than Lundell. Did not understand the hype on him during his draft year (he was excellent at being in the right position, but everything else left a lot to be desired for me), but the kid's a stud. That being said, I still think Rossi will be a very good player.

We debated this before and after the draft. I had Lundell as the #3 center in that draft (Byfield, Stuzle). I also thought he was the most NHL ready outside of the top-3 + Drysdale. I had him right with Holtz as the 5/6 BPA.

Stutzle is a winger, not a center. Can he play center? Sure... But he's much better on the wing.

Furthermore, professional scouts disagree with you. They considered Rossi the 2nd best center in the draft, behind only Byfield. And Rossi was also considered the 2nd most NHL ready prospect behind Lafreniere. Lundell was 3rd.

There are also scouts that said they thought Rossi would be a wing not a center in the NHL. Even the talking heads at the draft said that. Rossi's size and skating/speed raised red flags for them.

His skating reports are misleading. His edgework is nearly as good as Kaprizov's is. So speed is less of an issue there then one might think it is. Furthermore, he's also much faster than people think he is, he just rarely elects to use it. He's very selective in that regard.

His height is small. His weight and lower body strength makes it very hard to knock him off the puck. Multiple 6'2"+ 200lbs+ opponents have routinely stated how hard of a time they have in doing just that. He's not undersized in the slightest, he's just short. Despite that he's a literal tank on skates.

I'll conceed the part about the winger reports, but they also said it was far more likely given his weight and lower body strength he's most likely a top-six center in the NHL.

I wanted Lundell at first, too. He is a great player and played for my favorite Finnish team. But once we got a shot at Rossi, he was all I wanted. He is in the minors only due to the myocarditis he had.

This is a classic case of recency bias. Just because Lundell is better right now doesn't mean Rossi won't be better in the future. Rossi still has a higher ceiling.

When I get over that idiot Fenton letting Flehr run the 2018 draft and take Johansson in the 1st round, I'll see how I feel about the Rossi pick. On the plus side, by the time that happens we'll actually know what kind of player he ends up being.

Most of the time I think it's stupid to get worked up about a NHL draft pick before 4 or 5 years have passed and you actually know what you ended up with. Plenty of people got worked up because Fletcher took Erickson Ek over Boeser and it took around 5 years before we got to see the player Ek would become, which personally I'd rather have Ek over Boeser at this point. We'll see in a few years with Rossi what kind of player he becomes.

I say most of the time because the 2018 draft happened and sometimes your team takes a player that wasn't projected to go until at least the 3rd or 4th round in the 1st round.

Not a recency bias thing for me. I've been pretty steadfast in my opinion on this since the pick was made.

If COVID never happened and the season went on as normal I still think Rossi is in the AHL this year. He would have been in the OHL last year and there wasn't much of anything left for him really learn there. He would have scored a ton of points, but not gotten to play against men in a professional setting. This is a bash on the CHL transfer rules, than a dig at Rossi. I think Rossi would have fallen in the "too good for the CHL, but not ready for the NHL" group of like 10 players a year.

He was in Switzerland to start the 2020-21 season, remember? I think he would have continued playing there - against professionals -, participated in the WJC like normal and would have been in the Calder-considerations this year. But he has looked good in the AHL so far, and I think that, luckily, Covid set him back only by a year.

He was only in the Swiss league because of COVID. In a normal year he would have been in either the NHL or CHL, there aren't other options. I have no positive or negative takeaways from his WJC last year, the rest of his team was awful.

He has played 2 AHL games and missed the last 2 due to illness. He was okay against the mostly AHL/Euro quality competition in the OG qual games, but nothing standout or special.

No, Guerin mentioned the plan was for him to play in Switzerland, until training camp started. It wasn't Covid related at all. That was always the plan, he had zero intention of letting Rossi go back to the CHL.

If Rossi didn't make the team, he would go back to Zurich and play out the rest of the year out there.

Instead, Rossi caught Covid while in Switzerland. This was still 2-3 months before things started shutting down worldwide. At that point Covid was still upsetting plans. Not the main reasoning of them.

Mad about passing up on a future 1C level player for another future 1C player who was the consensus higher ranked and higher skilled prospect?

I get that he's not an absolute burner and is short but both those things hardly effect his game. He's still got good defensive instincts, faceoff ability, is fantastic on his edges and strong on his skates and can move it when he wants to. He's also got the higher offensive upside imo
