Problem with this hypothetical situation is if Vanecek wins the starter job that means Sam lost the job and likely isn’t looking like a guy would use a first to acquire. I’m not saying he isn’t worth it but suggesting a reality to this situation.

Two things to counter this point

1: Edmonton could be very very desperate for goaltending and have Ken Holland as GM
2: Samsonov losing the job doesn't necessarily mean him playing poorly, it may just mean the staff likes Vanecek more.

Great premise. If VV steals a job, Oilers should be all over Samsanov. I wouldn't be surprised if the Caps want to have both guys though, as long as they remain affordable. However, with Ovi's window, maybe they risk the goaltending cushion to help with other parts of the team. I like it overall though

1. Smith under contract for 1 more year and Skinner no longer waiver exempt. Ken Holland while he does Ken Holland things has yet to trade a 1st round pick since he's come to Edmonton, he very much values them. I'd be nervous going into the season with Smith/Skinner but also don't expect Ken Holland to panic buy another goalie if it doesn't make sense. There are usually a fair amoutn
2. If Samsonov plays well and VV is just better, I would expect them to stick with both as a tandem. That said, if VV wins the starting job you likely aren't signing him for $2.5mil... probably at least getting into the 3s.
