A bit corny idea of having OTT to pay about the same amount for pending UFA Hertl than SJ paid for pending UFA Karlsson, considering Hertl is a 1B center at his prime, and EK was one of the best D-man on the planet when he was traded.

Ottawa declines.

Under no circumstances should Ottawa pay more on Hertl than what Columbus paid on Matt Duchene.

And Hertl has a 3 team trade list and Ottawa almost certainly isn't on that list.

If Sens can do it, somehow, they must!
This is a decadent overpay, move from there.
Hertl would be as important as Brady&Chabot..-~

Im also with you that it makes no sense for Ottawa or Hertl to make this deal.

Hertl’s never been over a point per game in his career. Duchene had 58 points in 50 games when Ottawa traded him and was every bit of a #1 centre in the league. Idk about Hertl being “way better” …

Maybe way is an exaggeration, but without injuries Hertl wouldve easily been PPG in his career.

@BootBoi

I really doubt Ottawa gives up its 2022 first round pick, even if they start the season well. Just too risky for a team that is "just done rebuilding"

Matt Duchene was 28 y/o when CBJ aquired him. He had produced 107 pts in 118 games (0.91 PPG), which is slightly better than Hertl during the last 3 seasons (after his "breakout") : 0.87 PPG

What does it have to do with anything? I could name you a ton of players who would have been better without injuries. We are discussing a player's value and the injuries are part of the reality.

They didnt impact his game though, only his playing time. Hertl is a fantastic player who has never gotten the chance to produce like he should. His combined impact on both sides of the ice is higher than Duchanes was

Without injuries and personal problems, Bobby Ryan would have many more points than 569
Same for Milan Michalek who would have many more points than 446 without injuries
Martin Havlat is another one who would have more than 594 pts

etc etc

These players (like Hertl) with less injuries is an alternate reality, it has nothing to do with the current discussion and what @TheBoyDuddus told you

Matt Duchenes WAR in 2019 was 2.97. Hertl in that same year had a 3.09. My point is points dont tell the whole story of a player. Duchene was fantastic that one year and racked up some serious points, but his impact on the entire game is less than Hertls currently is and was at the same time. I think Duchenes trade is a great comp for Hertl, but the sharks dont need additives like Turris or Hammond included and are only looking for a quality prospect and a first, so this deal is not enticing.

This I can agree, I'd take Hertl above Duchene for sure.

Also you're not comparing correctly here. @sensonfire said "Under no circumstances should Ottawa pay more on Hertl than what Columbus paid on Matt Duchene." and you're comparing with what Dorion paid to get Duchene to Ottawa at first (which was seen as a big overpay)

The main pieces were Turris and the 1st (which became much higher than expected). Bowers was a recent first but he was not seen as a great prospect. Hammond was just a small cap dump, not a piece whatsoever

The return from Columbus was a 1st (19th OA, Sens picked Lassi Thomson) + Vitali Abramov (skilled player with flaws, gone to KHL for 2 years) + Jonathan Davidsson (looked promising to be a NHLer but ran into concussion issues)

So while Hetl is the better player to Duchene was then, the expected return should be somewhat similar (1st + good prospect + decent prospect)

Turris and Hammond were never a part of the Duchene trade with Columbus.

That was the Duchene trade with Colorado.

That deal isnt comparable to me, Duchene was far worse leaving Ottawa than he was getting there. Not really the same tier as Hertl then
