Why 5 yrs why not lock up all 8?

Keeps him cheaper now, and covers most of our vet contracts (Panarin, Trouba, Kreider and Goodrow), also its ends not too long after the cap starts starts rising again so he can get PAID in his next deal which takes him to 37 (not too young, not too old) so theres benefits for both sides

Think Kreider would stay as 1RW...Cuylle might be able to step into 3LW....be nice if they could turn Kravtsov into a player like a Dellandrea or Kaut to round out bottom 6.

the chances of fox leaving the rangers voluntarily are slim to none, i'd assume, based on his past actions. if they can lock him up at 9m for 5 years now and then he'll still be in line for another massive 8 year extension later when the cap's gone up as opposed to a smaller second deal because of his age, that might be good for the team (so they can limit the AAV in the contending window) and for fox (he gets more money during the latter half of his career). there are all sorts of ways they could go considering the "walk him to UFA" thing likely won't an issue in terms of him testing the market.

Kreider already has a spot cemented on PP1 for as long as hes here so he will still play enough on the 3rd line at ES and he has no hands and doesn't drive play so he may as well work on/polish his cycle game, as for Cuylle, im sure they love his game but idk if hes ready to contribute just yet, I'd rather he come in overcooked than undercooked
