Avs or Leafs did yall ever try Barrie up front

Description
I figure Edmonton essentially must break the bank this year and really go for it, watching Holland try and butt-fumble his way out of next year's cap situation is going to be tenuous. Problem is, the Oilers don't exactly have the assets to sustain long-term success while adding to all three of top-4 LHD, bottom-six center, and another middle-six winger. This approach fixes the more prudent positions while pigeonholing a really bad-at-his-actual-position defender into something more apt for his style.

I'm a bit skeptical regarding McLeod and think he might not be completely ready for a full-time NHL role on a team that should be moving heaven and earth to make a finals appearance this season.

Strictly curious as to whether or not any team has tried ol Barrie as a forward yet. Ducks fans feel free to let me know that I haven't offered enough for Getz and Lindy.

Barrie would be tolerable if the Oilers didn't have Ceci+Keith and Tippett was willing to play Tyson on the bottom pair with a Samorukov-type defender. The Cody Ceci signing remains one of the most enigmatic things the Oilers have done in recent memory, rivaled only really by trading the Barzal pick for Griff Reinhart and the Eberle-Strome-Spooner disaster.

My personal expectation is that the Oilers find a three-way deal to turn Kassian into Jensen next summer and the summer after that are probably looking at paying out the nose to dump Ceci.

no they kept barrie as a Dman

Its not a Barrie as a player issue, its a coaching problem with him in Edmonton. When you accept him for what he is and you build around his positives of his game he adds his value. Zone deployments, who is is partnered with, match ups, heavy PP time etc. He brings an element to the back end that most teams dont have. as a

he worked well in Colorado bc of how Bednar deployed him. Tippet wont be able to figure that out at this rate.

Care to elaborate on this a touch? My thinking suggests he'd be no worse a RW than Kassian, whom I really detest being in the top-9 until he can actually show third-line production. Barrie should function more or less as a Hyman that doesn't forecheck if that makes sense?

I don't know if it's a long-term fit, next season Barrie may need to wind back down on the blueline?

The market for both positions is abysmal this season: I see a lot of ANA-NYI trades that see Lindholm going for the equivalent of a first, second, and half decent prospect. I suspect it's a combination of both a deadline and division tax on top of a relatively unfair assessment of what Lindholm is. I agree it's a lot to pay, but the Oilers are very short on options to really go for it over the next season or two.

Absolutely that's a superb idea. He'd be like Yamamoto with his excellent puck control, lack of acceleration and nifty passing. Motion seconded ✔

It's a testament to how uncreative the NHL is that

Barrie, Ghost, etc. types aren't tried as forwards

Which is my main worry: Tippett is a horrendously inefficient coach bordering on ineffective and the toys he has to work with border on the nadir. I fully agree that bottom-pair evens minutes with a very defensively-specialized partner and PP time is optimal Barrie, I just can't get the calculus to work with the lesser roster options that Holland had to have this past summer.

Like next year I'd love to be able to stick Samorukov-Barrie as the full-time bottom pair next season but it requires at least one of Keith or Ceci to be in the top-four and the thought makes me sick.

i feel like barrie would be workable if he was on the second pair or something and deployed for offensive zone starts and on the power play. nurse isn’t really known for his defense either, and the two of them combined just makes it worse. they don’t have a single defender that’s super solid defensively to pair barrie with. ceci is horrible tho. no explaining that one.

Absolutely, it's kind of why I asked for some groupthink on the idea as a whole.

Barrie plays a bit of a rover style to begin with and is quite often as high as the half wall when he's in the offensive zone. I've seen him cycle before on the odd occasion. Given that I don't really have a good spot to fit him in on the blueline, I was curious as to what a short-term experiment with him up front would look like and whether or not he could adapt to the role.

The most optimal setup for the Oilers blueline (assuming they still acquire Lindholm) probably looks more like:

Nurse-Bouchard
Lindholm-Ceci
Koekkoek-Barrie

but the unfortunate reality is Tippett likely doesn't have the insight or willingness to sit Keith for any extended period of time. His intangibles are valued too highly by the organization and any detrimental on-ice effects are staunchly ignored as the organization is actually clinically allergic to math of any sorts.

I maintain that Barrie was the Leafs worse Dman (out of the six) for his one year stay in Toronto. Have him play forward....might be a good idea. He can play PP at RD. But at even strength, he's poor, and PK even worse.
Ceci was actually OK to good as Leaf for that one year. He took a lot of criticism but geez he played the hard minutes including the PK, OK. Now I don't think was worth of his contract awarded by way past prime time Holland.

On the Caps side, a few weeks back, another Oilers fan posted something like Barrie, Kassian, Broberg for Carlson. I thought the Caps didn't need Kassian, but other Caps fans liked Broberg enough to agree to the whole thing. Then some Oilers fans asked WSH to add, but didn't say what, and it looks like it got taken down.

So.... that might be one way out of Barrie and Kassian, if they're not wanted, but I don't know what WSH should add, either, or what prospect/pick is more reasonable than Broberg.

I don't doubt this but his inability to show up on a scoresheet is infuriating.

He's the only forward which Edmonton currently employs that doesn't require waivers to be sent down. It makes more sense to me to let him regain his offensive touch as a part of Bakersfield's top line while acquiring someone to produce over the course of the season.

I'm not as glued to Broberg or Lavoie as I have been in the past BUT Carlson would absolutely be a non-starter for me. Too much term. The point of moving Kassian next year and Ceci the year after is because of the absolute lack of cap space the Oilers are trying to navigate over the short-term. Carlson is a damn fine offensive defender but not at all what the Oilers need to be looking for.

I don't think you're being completely honest with that assessment and until you're willing to reach something more realistic. I've seen you make this claim a couple times and I don't know how to continue this conversation with you if you aren't willing to entertain the idea of a middle ground.

Ryan is a decent bottom-six piece, I'm not thrilled with him being penciled into the third line this season, but on the fourth line he's a gem of a player. The math suggests that any of Benson, Kassian, and Perlini should be over performing in fourth-line roles, and Sceviour is at minimum not going to cost goals against. Granted the Oilers religiously employ dinosaurs at every level of management and won't get out of their own way to allow those on-ice results to show.

I'd agree that Archibald and Shore were employed to penalty-kill and offer nothing else above replacement level. The less they play the better this team does.
