Pretty sure it’s because the the season already started so it’s prorated. Edit: and 57.5 is not divisible by 7

I think it a fair deal for both teams. Yea, his AAV is high for his production, but remember he hasn't been playing with elite players. With an improving Ottawa team his stats should improve.
Other RFAs have signed for "less" in value, and others "more.
When I see at some aging UFAs sign for too much, I think this is fine deal for the Sens and Brady.

I guess we'll see won't we...
Again I don't disagree thats in an overpay, but the Sens are taking a gamble that he'll be a 60-70 point guy in a year or two.
In exchange for that gamble they get a 7 year term which is good for a team that is not a desirable place to play

They certainly are taking a gamble - but not a smart one. 60-70 points may be obtainable, but is it worth over $8M?? Not according to the market. So even if he does improve his performance he STILL will be overpaid.

The Ottawa fans are the real winners here. After years of letting star players walk or trading them for peanuts they finally committed to keeping their young stars in the system.

I'll disagree with your statement "letting their young players walk". Certainly the Sens got a kings ransom for the aging declining Karlsson. After a poor deal acquiring Duchene, they got a good deal from Columbus for a middling player. Stone wanted to move on....so the Sens didn't let him walk, that's the right of UFAs.

I agree with the overpayment perspective, but the market is also changing rapidly. People rather overpay RFA's than overpay UFA's and that idea is scaling.

But that's been happening for a few years now, that's not a new thing. McDavid, Draisaitl, Matthews, Marner, etc - lots of contract comps out there and none are as heavily overpaid as this one.

The Svetch deal was already a little high. This guy is a 50-point winger, how is that worth $8M+?? Terrible deal for Ottawa.

You're paying an extra 2 million for the grit and character.

He probably tops out as a 60 point guy. OTT wanted term and had to grossly overpay to get it. Who is the comparable here? Tkachuk is significantly worse than Svech, Suzuki, Pettersson, Kaprizov, etc but ended up getting more than most of them

Well ya.. It started with those guys, the superstars, but its trickling down to your stars/above average players.

More relevant comps would be like: Keller, Hishier, Svech, Batherson, Tuch, etc..

Its high..
But also worth considering that his team sucks and putting up points doesn't come as easy as almost any other team.
He is a 60 point guy almost anywhere else.

this is not true.
Matter of fact, one could argue the exact opposite as someone has to score.
Look at a guy like Dzingle who collected points in OTT.....but was a bust everywhere else.
It's the part of the TDL you have to avoid. Staying away from point collectors on bad teams wanting huge returns, because truth is, someone has to score.

Does he score 60 points on a good team..... odds of that are neither here nor there.
This kind of assumptions just aren't true. Just like saying a guy who nets 40 goals only does it because he plays with a great center. That simply isn't true either.

Even if he was a 60 point player. That doesn't get you over 8 mil per.
The difference between 6 and 8 million isn't 7 points.

It's just a high contract. That's all there is to say here. It also sets a bad tone because if someone Stutzle explodes point wise, what's he gonna demand if a guy who puts up points at a 53 point pace an get 8?

You end up with the TOR effect.

Indeed. The structure is weird. It almost yells " Atleast we got off cheap, after selling him after 2 years"
First year 4M, second 6.5M and not a cent in signing bonus. Its like Melchyk is making it easy on himself to move it onwards.

yup, and with their track record, I believe it was Yost who wrote an article showing the history fo the sens moving or buying out in some cases every player that has signed long term there, no one has finished their contract there who signs long term.

Until Melynk shows that he is willing to pay his young talent off their ELCs and also is serious about keeping them paying their UFA market values, then contract length is sort of irrelevant for how long. he could be there still. The salary what makes me think they are buying their time, 2 years they will see if they want to pay him that type of money or not

Suzuki’s is a year older, has played on a better team every year and still hasn’t had any seasons as good as Brady statistically.

First off Suzuki is a two way CENTER, and last year he had a better PPG/Average than Tkachuk has ever had. Also Tkachuk is a month younger... not a year

I'm really surprised he moved away from getting a 3 year bridge deal but woof is this bad.

Hes not worth this and the full NMC at the end of the deal makes it so much worse.

Regardless of slightly overpaying contract CH% k, the player takes the 7 yr and gets 3 yrs with NMC. The Senators sign a corner stone of their club and now can start solidifying and building/branding. Why not enter this with a success story... logos, you get the whole idea, "its the beginning of a beautiful friendship". Now work magic.

I know it's a high price for a young player BUT Ottawa is stoked to just have a young stud and they don't and can't take a chance of loosing him. H e is a first line forward and at 6'4" tall it's a huge player for them at the Center position or Wing. I really like how the team structured the deal because if he does not perform in these next two years at a certain level they will have the option to try and move him before his BIG money kicks in and before his NMC becomes active. Smart move for both sides and he's now a VERY rich 22 year old.

I love this player. He's a winner. He does the little things that are required to win against good teams. OTT will be good in a few years and Brady will be right at the center of their team success. That being said, this is a lot of money for a Winger. Especially a Winger with a ceiling of around 30G, in my opinion. I would've like to see $7.5M with this term. But, at least they got it done. Younger teams need their best players in the lineup for the entire season.
