No you were assuming that Meier would definitely get 10. Wrongly. You also don't understand the structure of the contract. It isn't 10mil AAV it's 10 base which is what his salary is next year too, 6aav and 10 base. If a team can afford that (SJs can) then why not, many players have a base salary much higher than their cap hit.
Anyway this is moot as Zacha is not a good offer for a top line winger who is still young in Timo. It's not close to enough
Here is what I said word-for-word: "The $10 million QO is 100% cemented into his contract. Its based off of his base salary, which is $10m next year.
Sharks will have the right to (a) negotiate a new deal, (b) offer him the QO or (c) let him walk to UFA."
And I fully understand how QO are calculated. In Meier's case, it will be 100% of base salary in final year.
2021-22: $6m AAV ($6 million in cash via bonus and salary)
2022-23: $6m AAV ($10 million in cash via salary)
2023-24: $10m AAV ($10 million in cash via salary) (if qualified)
And no, no other players in NHL have a salary that is $4 million above AAV.
