Just say no to J Johnson

Description
I don't know wtf I'm doing with respect to the trade. Guess I figured Buffalo would take a chance on Compher, who could provide leadership for them, and MacDonald, who had a nice season in his limited role last year, in exchange for a guy that is a pending UFA. Hagg provides a good depth option for Colorado in the event of injury and is better than Jack Johnson.

What’s the reason COL does that? Side note MacDermid is so awful.

I feel like the Avs would just be better off using MacDonald or maybe Barron while Toews is still out. They may want to acquire some depth at the TDL but this feels like a lot to give up right now.

Totally agree that all of Gilbert, JJ and MacDermid are terrible and should not be used.

A very competent 7D is kinda nice considering Toews is out to start and a couple of the regulars have a tendency to get hurt.

I'm not huge on MacDonald despite some nice performances last season, and I think Compher is pretty redundant at this point, so it saves a bit of cap space while providing depth at an important position. Plus it hopefully ensures we never, ever see Jack Johnson or MacDermid (with the latter being an exception only if he gets in at 4LW).

This is surprising to me. I actually thought Hagg looked pretty decent in the games I saw last season. The charts do illustrate last year was far superior to the prior two though I guess, and that was in a more defensive role, so at least I'm not totally off.

In any case, unless we value Compher at his price tag, then it's not as though Colorado is giving up a ton here. Maybe make it a pick going the opposite way and it's more fair based on this.

Hagg isn’t good. You gotta let the Compher hate go. During a bad year he produce point wise what Nichushkin did and more than Jost. He doesn’t have a definitive spot, but that makes him more useful to coaches and easier to hate by fans. He is light years better than Maltsev, LOC, Helm, Kaut, Bowers and any other bottom 6 candidate not named Newhook, Nichushkin or Jost. Is his cap hit high yeah but throwing away a functional versatile player for a horrible one doesn’t make the Avs better it makes them worse.

I don't hate Compher. I just see him in no man's land. He doesn't fit on the third line and is paid way to much for the fourth. With guys like Ranta and Bowers looking like they're ready, he's the one I move. If Ranta can't cut it in the top nine, then they address it at the tdl.

I stand by my take on Hagg not being awful. He put up solid underlying numbers last season, while being deployed more defensively than years past. He'd be fine as 7D and better than what's left of JJ. I can seethe argument for sticking with MacDonald but I'm just not as high on him as others.

Adjust trade value as necessary, but I think a better 7D and a spot for Ranta is fine, considering the team isn't giving up anything of significance. They'll still have assets to chase a forward at the deadline (and more cap space to fit their contract).

He is paid what he is paid you can’t change that. He’s better than Ranta and Bowers at this stage by a lot, and is regardless of where you play him going to get you 30 pts. 30pts is nothing to sneeze at. His versatility is an asset, I don’t know about you but I’m a lot more comfortable with the thought of him on the ice in the last 5 minutes of a period than anybody in the bottom 6 not named Nichushkin or Jost.
