Description
Does WSH need to add to tempt Ottawa? Should they? What would it take that wouldn't hurt WSH's chances of winning again with Ovechkin?

Brady's really good at checking and pretty good at offense. He doesn't kill penalties yet, which is what Eller and Jensen excel at, so this trade makes the Caps better at some strengths but could make their PK a weakness. Can they fix that with other moves?

Ottawa, without Tkachuk, goes into another mini rebuild, picking top five the next two drafts. They unload Eller and Conor Brown for two more mid 1st round picks, plus. They trade Jensen and Tierney for a pair of 2nds and some prospects. They sign some rentals next summer and trade them at the next deadline for more picks. By the time they finish rebuilding, they're ready to contend for a while, but do their fans have the patience?

Tkachuk gets to contend all the way to free agency, and then join another contender, or stick around if McMichael and Lapierre turn out good, and he's having fun.

Win-win-win?

He might but I doubt it. IMO, Ottawa is a team on the rise....with or without Brady. If I was a young player, might be one of the best teams in the league/most fun teams for the next five years.

Yeah, and the Patriots aren't doing well this year, so Tom Brady doesn't want to play with that losing organization anymore.Huh?

If he's that good, he'll have Ovechkin's #1LW spot in no time. Then when he hits UFA, teams will know he's worth over 9.5M. If all the Cup rings didn't convince them.

Maybe not. If he's rumored to want $8M, giving up three years of UFA, then I went with half a million less AAV for each year of UFA not being bought, here. And this is what WSH can easily afford.

If Ott wants Hagelin, that leaves WSH with more cap space, but with no top penalty killers left from a unit that finished top ten last year. We know Ottawa likes that kind of move because they were too happy to grab Brown and Zaitsev from the Leafs, so I think we can agree that IRL Sens brass see some real hockey value in Eller and Jensen, even if the fans on Cap Friendly don't. And of course Kempny has finished in the league's top 32 defensemen once in even strength points and once in plus/minus. He missed last year and doesn't look amazing in training camp, but he's playing, and by the deadline he could turn back into a top pairing defenseman. That's the kind of risk/reward pickup that, if they're willing to keep rebuilding, could make this a good deal for them.

Exactly. Thanks. I can't imagine why else he hasn't signed, yet. So if there's a trade that gives the Sens a better chance to win the Cup this decade, then I think they would look at that. Is Brady worth more than two top penalty killers off a team that's top 10 in PK%, one of whom has the offense to be the Sens' #2C, plus a year of draft picks? Maybe. I'm open to suggestions.

I think the Caps fans on here aren't moving McMichael or Lapierre, and the Senators don't want LD prospects. Maybe it takes one of the Caps' young goalies?

My concern is that, relative to a bad team, Brady is average at puck possession. For all of his hits and takeaways, his opponents get more shots than the Senators while he's on the ice, and the Sens have guys like Conor Brown for whom that's definitely not true.

So the other reason I could see the contract negotiations stalling is if, in spite of his potential, the Senators are not quite sure that Brady Tkachuk is worth $64M to them, yet. And in that case, I think they could certainly ask for a little more than this, but maybe it's a start.

You are entitled to believe what you want but maybe you should try to speak to "hockey people" to see how Tkachuk is valued around the league.

3. Discount to contend? Washington is kind of headed in the wrong direction. In a couple years I’m guessing the senators are more likely to contend than Washington.

smile I like it. And he's worth it. But what do the Caps do with their players? They should have that value by this year's deadline, for all the same reasons that Conor Brown will: even strength production, penalty klling, term remaining, low cap hits, and defense.

But if the Sens overpay Brady to buy up UFA years, Brady will not have the same trade value to WSH, which won't be able to afford him. Assuming he signs somewhere before the season, there has to be some risk involved. I could see WSH kicking in an extra 2nd, to compensate for the chance that Ott doesn't find the trades it wants.

Thanks for making a suggestion. Please keep the conversation going.

Okay. You mentioned McMichael in another thread, but a different Caps fan passed. I'm trying to keep the conversation going, because I think Tkachuk fits the Caps' team concept, and could be an interesting pickup for them. PLDGEY has an idea, above. How would you make all this work, under the cap, and in time for the season?

Does it take a goalie swap? Is there a B prospect on WSH's roster that could help Ottawa? What about an unsigned 2nd round RHD like Brent Johnson?

Ottawa fans want young, right hand shot offensive wings. I don't know if the Caps should offer him or not, but Daniel Sprong is 24, shoots right, and got 2.62 points/60 last year. Seems like he's going to break out for more points as soon as he gets more ice time.

Alexeyev or Samsonov might be worth discussing. I don't personally see the Caps moving McMichael even for Eichel, but I could see them trying hard to land another top power forward, to help them stand up to a tough division.
