The Only Move That Makes Sense

Description
Why pick between Engvall and Brooks to go on waivers to start the year, followed by the other going on waivers before the first road trip (to make room for a 7th D) when you can keep them both with one trade.
Disclaimer: I enjoy Kerfoot on this team, he is very useful and stepped up big with JT out last playoffs.
The Leafs have the choice between keeping Kerfoot as a versatile player that looks to start on either 3rd or 4th line. Or they can trade him for an asset and in the process keep Engvall and Brooks from going on waivers, be able to carry them both, Semyonov and Lili at one time, create internal competition on the 4th F line AND the 3rd D pair and the ability to accrue cap space over the duration of the year.

Gonna keep saying this because for some reason people seem to forget constantly but Kerfoot is the Leafs best LW. He is also their best 3C option, so actually you can play him at either one of those, so if the Leafs pick one, he plays the other.
Then the choice is what worse player you bump out of the lineup down the line, trading a much better player just so you can keep worse players in the line up or the press box is a dumb idea, especially when you have a bunch of guys on the roster who could either implode or simply not be the player they looked like in 21 games last season

This only makes sense if you think Kampf, can. be a 3C....and he sure doesn't have the offensive flair for the job, or to move up if Tavares or Matthews is hurt. Spezza hasn't played much centre at all in the past few years. By the way, Kerfoot was very good at centre during the last playoff series.
I understand the cap situation, but Kerfoot versatility and value might trump keeping other players and hoping they can do the job.

yeah, getting a player for like a 1/5th of his value is totally letting the leafs off the hook

no one is claiming Engvall and Brooks off waivers so that solves that.

So the solution to keep 2 4th lines is to trade the only LW that was on the team last year that can play top 6?

Alex Kerfoot
2020 23 points in 56 games
2019 28 points in 65 games
Last year he got outshot and out-chanced pretty badly whenever he played without William Nylander at 5v5. He can’t drive a line, skates himself into bad ice and then chips it off the boards to nobody. He is good in the defensive zone and is ok at killing penalties but is that worth 3.5 mil? Frustrating inability to excel in the faceoff circle.
I would rather keep Mikheyev & Engvall for 2.9M combined, than Alex Kerfoot for 3.5M. Kerfoot is 100% expendable

Who was his competition when he wasn't playing with Nylander last year?

The entire left side of those proposed lineup could turn out to be busts 20 pt forwards if they don't latch on to a Top 6 job. Hopefully it doesn't happen, and it's not really likely, but none of them are a guarantee to score more than Kerfoot at 5v5.

He's also the most capable of filling in as a top 6 C for a few games if needed.

So you wanna keep him in case one of Matthews or Tavares gets hurt? If they continue to play him in the top 6 as a LW, don't you want more production from him? He doesn't provide enough value for someone making 3.5 aav.

Kerfoot Tavares Nylander and TOI 94.55 xGF/60 3.11 xGA/60 1.88
Engvall Kerfoot Mikheyev TOI 83.38 xGF/60 2.28 xGA/60 2.32
Hyman Kerfoot Mikheyev TOI 55.98 xGF/60 1.64 xGA/60 1.64

If he does have someone a little more offensive:
Engvall Kerfoot Kapanen TOI 76.18 xGF/60 2.82 xGA/60 2.18

Now David Kampf in CHI:
2020
Hagel Kampf Kubalik TOI 124 xGF/60 2.41 xGA/60 1.75
Hagel Kampf Carpenter TOI 81.05 xGF/60 2.57 xGA/60 1.95

Kampf is more than capable of handling the 3C role. And with Engvall, Seymonov, Brooks, Amadio all able to play C and give you the same offensive production that Kerfoot gives. Plus they are all just as good defensively.

This isn't a hate on Kerfoot, I like what he brings, just not a cap strapped team like the Leafs.

I doubt Kerfoot gets traded. Not right now anyways. Engvall will likely get demoted/waived/traded. Leafs do need to keep some depth on the Marlies when Kase gets injured for the 55th time. It's unfortunate. He's a good player.

Gee, Kerfoot would have the fourth highest forwards point getter last season. With Arvidson and Jarnok gone.....second. Nashville should be begging for him if Kerfoot was available.

He was in DZ minutes and a matchup role when he wasn't playing with Nylander and JT.

He wasn't expected to score.

If those players you mentioned were as good as Kerfoot offensively and defensively... they would be in the NHL. You are kind of pushing it there.

I do like having Kerfoot around in case one of Matthew's or JT gets hurt. Good teams have good C depth.

While I agree, engvall even in minors has a cap charge. Same with Mikheyev. Are engvall and mikheyev better than brooks or gabriel or amadio, yes, but the difference between those two in the lineup for a capped team is 2.9mil compared to 1.5mil. But to carry 20 skaters and to have some depth in case of short term injuries, carry 21 skaters (in an olympic condensed season) is ideal, and maybe both engvall and mikheyev need to go.

If the team waives engvall, i doubt he gets picked up, but then he'd have to clear waivers for the new team, so I think theyre better off trying to trade him and a 6th for nothing.

If he is their best LW and their best 3C, why is there 0% chance he starts the year at 1LW or 3C? If the Leafs were relying on him to play one of those two roles with the corresponding deployment for the year; the cap hit would be justified. Unfortunately, they just don't have the luxury to keep around a player with a 3.5mill cap hit with plan A being 3LW or 4C. The only real value he brings is as a backup plan to step into 1/2C like in playoffs last year and I just don't think that outweighs the ability to accrue cap space over the year and bolster the lineup with a true 1LW at the deadline.

so you play him at 2LW, whatever. The point is trading an actual guy who is the best you have at 2 roster spots because some rando you signed MIGHT be able to do it is a dumb idea. If you trade Kerfoot and Bunting is a 4th liner or not even an NHLer what do you do? Or if Ritchie is a 3rd liner, or Kase gets hurt or Kampf cant hack it etc etc etc.
this isnt about luxury, this is about playing your best players because you are trying to contend and cap space panic doesnt change that, especially when you can literally fit all the players who are NHLers on the roster. You can still trade him later if the cheaper guys show they can hack it or upgrade at the deadline without putting all your eggs in one basket to start the year.

Meh, agree to disagree. Currently, Leafs have Miky at 2LW, is Kerfoot an improvement? Yes. Is he a big enough improvement over Miky at 2LW to even make a difference in their point total at the end of the season? Questionable. The main point here is the Leafs need to put themselves in a position to improve their lineup at TDL, heading into playoffs and making one small move at the start of the year could put them on track to do so, playing it safe all year keeping Kerfoot around as a "just in case" or minor improvement at 2LW isn't enough to win in this league. It's all about having the best lineup come playoff time, not the start of the season.
