Oilers final cuts - McLeod starts the year in AHL

Description
McLeod hasn't done enough in preseason and there's no point of keeping him here in the press box. He also doesn't need to clear waivers so I think it makes the most sense.

Perlini-Shore-Turris has played well in the preseason so I can see them being in the lineup. Sceviour has played well and can PK. He can replace Kassian or Turris. Shore and Turris can both play Centre.

I agree with this to start. Pressure will be nice and high on all of those 4th line vets, with replacements for all there at a moment's notice (Benson if Perlini falters, Sceviour when Turris falters, and McLeod on recall if Shore falters). Plus, nobody lost to waivers, which is nice.

On D, if Russell is on IR for a while, wouldn't mind seeing Lagesson waived if a better Dman can be scooped on waivers - like Lauzon from Seattle (who may be the odd man out just because Borgen is a right shot). Not convinced Lagesson would be taken right now anyway, and if he was, so long as the Dman replacing him is better (Lauzon definitely would be), that would be fine.

Russell is expected to play a pre-season game... not ready to go tonight but could be in as soon as Thursday. I think there's a good chance Lagesson clears as teams cut their 8th Dmen... likely some will be better than Lagesson.

Agreed with the McLeod situation. He just hasn't looked good... send him down and make him earn the call-up. Guys like Shore/Perlini/Turris have looked better in pre-season. Go with the veterans until there's injuries or McLeod forces the issue.

Glad to hear that for Russell, I think he could actually fit really well with Bouch's style so far from what I've seen in camp. Hope he is 100% when he's back.

Don't mind lighting a fire under McLeod either - remember Leon getting sent down to start the 15-16 season? I think that truly fired him up - and it never stopped since haha. Just like Leon then, better 20 mins in Bake each night for at least a few weeks than 10 mins in EDM.

So, McLeod hasn't done enough, but Benson has??? I'd like to keep both guys especially with no Archibald in the mix, but if push came to shove McLeod more so than Benson....

Just a straw in the wind -- if Kale Clague passed through waivers, it would be odd if Lagesson were picked up.

I really like the idea of Russell with Bouchard while he figures out the NHL. And his PK/shutdown ability doesn't hurt considering how offence focused the d group is.

I think being sent down until you're ready is a more powerful motivator. Also, the worst thing you can do is give him the spot even though he didn't earn it and have him bounce between the 4th line, pressbox, and minors.

Benson needs waivers to be sent down, McLeod is still exempt. Benson is unlikely to go unclaimed.

While on-ice performance is a critical consideration, asset management is quite important as well. McLeod is waiver exempt, so the Oilers can reassign him without risk of another team scooping him up for free. Benson is not waiver exempt, so it makes sense to keep him with the club instead of exposing him to a waiver claim. Besides, its unlikely Benson will improve much in Bakersfield, whereas McLeod could work on developing more of a shooter's mentality in order to boost his potential offensive production when he gets back to the NHL. With Holloway now unlikely to see NHL time this season, McLeod should be the undisputed first call-up and his bonuses amount to only $150k, which should be easy to fit in when he does play in Edmonton later this season.

Benson can fill in as an extra forward, practice with the NHL guys regularly, and get some game time as the season progresses. Worst case scenario would be placing him on waivers and losing him after giving as many opportunities as reasonably possible. Alternatively, he might see some success and work his way into the lineup on a relatively frequent basis, or he may serve as a decent trade piece should the need arise.

I understand the asset management part, but the one thing you're not grasping for that argument, should Benson be the extra Forward, how is he getting better as the 13/14th forward who would only see the lineup in limited minutes, when he's SUPPOSED to be looked at as more of an offensive guy, you're just diminishing the asset to be nothing but a waiver guy who another team MAY or may not want to take a chance on for free... Again, I would love nothing more than to see both guys in the top 9 but it's looking more and more grimm unless one of the wingers in the top 6 gets dealt and/or Turris does...

Oh man the whole "hasn't done enough in preseason" thing is a thing that needs to go McLeod has looked totally fantastic and is easily a top 12 oiler forward

His puck control, skating balance and decision making are more and more similar to RNH every day and he's better at those things than everyone lest 97 29 RNH

Preseason is not about results

It's about seeing where everyone is at

He's progressing really well and is 100% an NHLer

The honest truth is in camp, Shore has been better. Does that mean Shore is likely better all season? Not at all. But coaches like to play the guys who are currently clicking - i.e. Shore and Perlini together.

I just hope if Shore goes dry for several games, and is getting caved in possession as per usual, then they make the switch. But until that happens, you play the hot hand. The minute that happens, McLeod needs to be in there.

Benson's predicament is not a new development, he has been an iffy proposition from the moment he was drafted. The Oilers bet that he might overcome his history of injury and become a middle-six scoring forward in the NHL. Instead, he's at risk of being labelled a tweener simply because he has been a high-scoring talent in the past, a leading scorer in the AHL, and a young player who has struggled to have an impact in the very few NHL games he's played so far. Another season in the AHL is unlikely to change Benson's lot, he's pretty much plateaued in his development at that level. I see no harm in giving him more time practicing and competing at the NHL level, doing so will give him more exposure and experience, and allow him to become more comfortable in a bottom six role. If he can provide some depth scoring then great. If he continues to struggle then perhaps its time to shop him for whatever return can be had, or take the risk of losing him on the waiver wire. McLeod has more room for improvement than Benson does right now. He can get tons of ice time in Bakersfield and focus on developing a more assertive style of play. That is what's missing in McLeod's game, and if he can address that deficiency he will quickly solidify himself as an Oiler once he is recalled.

Did you not read the description? Its not that, its about development and waivers. Why have him sit here when he can play 20 mins a night in the AHL and light a fire under him. We've got tons of 4th liners anyways.

I hope all the comments above answered your questions. Truth is Ryan and Shore have outplayed McLeod in preseason. He has no spot on the team right now - luckily enough being the 1C in the AHL may be the best spot right now. It won;t be the whole year. but it definitely isn't right now. Good thing he doesnt need to clear waivers.
