Trading AJ

Description
The salaries are pretty much the same, but Connolly is more built more for bottom six, has playoff experience (should that matter for the Devils and the season goes well) and could be a positive guy for Wood and McLeod.
Connolly is currently a cap hit in the minors for CHI. Worst case for CHI, they save $100k.

Johnsson could still provide offense for CHI if he plays at the pro-level as they would still have cap room with Shaw on LTIR.

Also, if Connolly unfortunately goes back to suffering from concussions, the Devils won't be in cap hell when dealing with it and will allow someone else to step up. Also, the Devils won't have to keep working to find a home for AJ where he works as it just doesn't seem to be working...

By the way, this is more so looking at a roster in December and less so for opening day as Holtz might need time to cook.

Honestly, no deal. The buyout option is better on Connolly. I also dislike AJ because of how much he was spam traded to the Hawks back in the day.

Is AJ really struggling that much in NJ? That is so sad to me.

As a Leaf fan I love the guy. Super hard working, skilled player. MVP when we won the calder cup and was good on the Leafs. I thought he was a perfect fit for NJ since they needed wingers.

I hope they give him one last shot before moving on from him. I still beleive!

I'm going to take just a second to let you understand how Hawks fans feel about AJ. He's 100% worse than Connolly. Just because NJD gave up an asset for him doesn't mean he's worth $1M. He's a very bad hockey player. VERY BAD. When he was with TOR he got to play with Matthews AND Nylander. He was literally the 2nd most propped up player in the entire NHL behind Kassian. Connolly may not be a good player. I get that, BUT he's definitely better than AJ and have a better buyout. At least send us a 2nd round pick for that bag of pucks that you're just realizing is a bag of pucks.

It looks like the Devils are giving him one last shot. He's been practicing with Nico and Bratt on the second like in training camp

Lol dramatic much. He’s a fine player. Not worth his cap hit, but chill

Doesn't make much sense to me in bringing in Connolly for AJ, Devils are likely to have plenty of forwards available to fill in on 4th line duties so no need in adding Connolly.
The ideal AJ trade would be to trade him at this years TDL with 50% retention hoping to grab a B-level prospect to a contending cap strapped team, provided Devils are looking to sell at TDL.

Well, NJ traded Joey Anderson for him, so not that much of an asset (sorry Joey, no disrespect intended, you're a fine player & by all accounts a good man). Throwing more assets at disposing AJ, would make no sense. His cap hit comes off when things start tightening up for NJ, so they should be ok.

I get the reason for the post, worthy idea, but I agree with you, plenty of younger 4th line options with potential to grow in the system. Even in a playoff push scenario, where Connolly would make a a difference, it's probably preferable letting a kid play & taking your lumps.

Trade at this year's deadline sounds like best option ... Hopefully, he chips in a bit and establishes some value.

What's up with claiming Geertson anyway? How does that make sense. He'll be waived again in days

Understand this doesn't make sense that if you were buying someone out, buying out AJ would actually be cheaper...

Okay, but do you give no credence to the sense that if you are throwing someone in the minors, AJ is cheaper regardless if that is where Connolly is going to be?

I just can't see how AJ is worth absolutely anything even at 50% if not just taking another bad contract with a player that might fit in more.

The structure is less favorable to Chicago in the important years. Connolly has 2 years at about 1 mil while AJ has 2 years (1 at 2,5, other at 250k). Hawks will need more cap next year,

That's fair as far as next season if they need it more than the following year where AJ would be an advantage.

As far as our cap situation goes, Conolly is a better option as we need the cap space next offseason.
