Current roster based on preseason games

Description
--- FORWARDS ---

The top two lines seem pretty set. Bednar wants to give Newhook a long look at center so Nichuskin is the only realistic option at 2LW.

Newhook and Jost have been played together quite a bit in preseason, with Newhook at C, so that seems like a logical combination. 3RW is open, and thus far Ranta has made the best case for it after his 1 goal + 1 assist performance against Minnesota.

If Ranta jumps over Compher for 3RW that probably means that Compher slots in at 4C. Maltsev is the other candidate for that spot but he hasn't grabbed the spot yet. Helm and O'Connor are locks for 4LW and 4RW.

--- DEPTH FORWARDS ----

Maltsev probably has the inside line for the 13th forward spot given that he was targeted in a trade, but his waiver exemption could make it easy to send him down.

I've used the Taxi squad to rank players by position based on who likely gets the early call-ups. Bowers was impressive in the last rookie tournament game he played in (2 goals) and also against Vegas with the best Corsi on the team so I think he's got the edge for first call-up.

Sherwood is a known entity for Bednar which probably gives him an edge over the others.

Kaut failed to impress against Minnesota and got a team low 9 minutes of TOI, but if he has a good start in the AHL he could get a call-up if we need someone to play at a level above 4th line, because for his failings he does at least have 3rd line upside unlike all the other depth guys. After him it's anyone's guess as to who gets a call-up.

---- DEFENSE ----

On defense we've seen Byram play with Jack Johnson, and Girard with Johnson. Ideally Murray could slide into Toews' spot with Makar if Toews starts the season on IR, but apparently he didn't have great chemistry with Makar in a practice session so we might see some mixed pairs to start with.

MacDermid cost a 4th so he'll certainly not be waived, but hopefully we don't see him play too often on the evidence of the Wild game.

Adrian Dater wrote an article yesterday saying the Jack Johnson will be getting a contract, which is not surprising as he's been solid and Bednar has been praising his play in preseason. He'll be the 7D presumably.

JB always gives tenure a chance to fail. I can't see Ranta making the opening night roster. Newhook was moved AHEAD of Jost on the 1st day of camp, so he's locked in. Sakic traded for Maltsev, so he's locked in. O'Connor just got a 3yr deal, locked in. Helm was a UFA, locked in. Compher got a 4yr deal and isn't on the final year. If he had one year left, he could be traded like Cole or Soderberg or Barrie. But since he doesn't he'll get a solid chance this season. Ranta didn't look great in his first NHL stint. I would be pretty surprised if Ranta makes it right away. I can see him being first callup though.

Yeah, it might be likely that Maltsev starts ahead of Ranta simply due to being a trade, but Bednar has been averse to playing Compher with Newhook and Jost so far in preseason, and Ranta has really impressed. 3RW is probably Compher's to lose though given how Bednar operates.

That's the key and it isn't just Bednar - it's the brass that defers to vets until it's clear they should go a different direction. While I agree that experience is good, it is also overrated.

Ranta’s first NHL stint was against VGK in the playoffs no easy chore. In camp and in his preseason game he has been a beast he has been significantly better than Maltsev, LOC, Compher and Jost. Yes it’s preseason but if he keeps playing this way there is no way they keep him off the team, he provides a unique physicality with an offensive upside that none of the others in the bottom 6 provides. I think if you see him get extensive work on the PK in the remaining preseason games that will be the tell tale sign they intend to play him at least to start the season. MacDermid is the one who doesn’t belong that is going to take a 7th dman 13th forward spot.

Kaut, Bowers and Ranta have the most to gain/lose in the remainder of the preseason. Kaut in particular needs to get in a groove, my take on him is he needs to get out of his own head and play with better linemates because he has a knack/habit at playing to the level of his linemates he can PK, he is physical when needed and he can slot up and down the line up imo.
Bowers, if it were me I’d give him the 4C spot. Fast, smart but with limited offensive upside. Personally I’ve liked him a lot more than Maltsev who has been a little disappointing to me.
Ranta, dude was a beast against MIN. Fast, physical, goes to the net everything Avs fans have been screaming for. Can he manage the mental side of it though? If they start playing him on the PK and he is even adequate I don’t know how they keep him off the opening night roster.

I think this is important to Sakic, a former player. If you replace a vet with a rookie, you gotta be able to look him in the eye and explain it. Of course, his agent is taking notice and that agent likely has many other clients. So it's about reputation and your word.

I think if Ranta had performed better in the playoffs, Sakic doesn't get both Maltsev and Helm.

Bowers certainly looked good in his last couple of games (i.e. the last rookie game and against Vegas where he won the Corsi). He's probably got a body too many to get ahead of though, especially if Ranta keeps it up and takes the 3RW job to knock Compher to 4C.

Maltsev didn't convince me against Minnesota either, I thought he was especially bad on the PK where he over-committed on the point man which left all kinda of room and effectively set up a 4-on-3 several times. He did however win 9 of 13 draws which won't have gone unnoticed for Bednar considering that we lack a good faceoff guy. If he can't PK well though I don't see the point even if he does win more draws than he loses.

Maybe but that's really unfair to Ranta - taking him almost straight out of college and throwing him into a playoff situation that wasn't going well already. Holding that against him, especially when the entire team wasn't performing well, is ridiculous. And Ranta is acquitting himself quite nicely right now.

I was shocked to see him tossed into the playoffs like that. I'm not against Ranta being on the roster; based on Sakic's actions it doesn't seem like he'll be on the Avs opening night. Will be a fun story to follow this week...
