I think you more than two 5th would be necessary for 1.5 mil in retention but other than that, I think it is a fair offer. Would be a good piece for the avs.

This is creative - far too creative for Sakic. They like to keep their trades simple. But you did good.

If this is a deadline trade, there may not be a need to have the extra retention via SJ.

I'm not sure about the lines either. I feel like the second line is three guys who want to shoot the puck and maybe not the right mix. Maybe Newhook can play between Forsberg and Burakovsky with a Jost, Kadri, Nichuskin third line. Idk, just a thought.

Really? I would disagree on that.

The Duchene 3-way was anything but simple as it involved 8 pieces, 6 going to Colorado from 2 teams.

The Barrie trade was anything but simple - including 3 players, 2 picks, and 50% retention.

The Saad trade could have been a straight 1-for-1, but instead it involved 4 players and $1m retention which then allowed Sakic to acquire Toews and sign him to an AAV than just about squeezed into the cap structure (barely leaving $900k for Jost as well).

The Kuemper trade involved retention, thereby enabling the Murray signing.

Clearly these trades all involve a lot of planning and strategic thinking, suggesting that Sakic is more than capable of finding creative solutions to get a deal over the line.

This roster is over the cap.

Clearly the solution is to move Compher's $3.5m to SJ or Nashville in this scenario as part of either deal. O'Connor can take that spot at 4RW instead of eating nachos.

I do like the idea of getting Forsberg though. A line driver for the 2nd line would make this forward group look like a legit cup team again, as it fills that massive hole at 2LW, and slots everyone else into appropriate roles in the rest of the bottom 9.

Well, all except the Duchene deal involved one team. But using a third team to deal with cap issues or taking on an LTIR contract doesn't appear to be Sakic's style. He's definitely not as creative as BriseBois. But maybe that's an ownership issue.

We need to subtract another $1.5 m from SJ’s RS. So they actually have more room.

There are many ways to be creative.

Brisbois is pretty creative yes, but he's also gotten lucky with injuries the last two cup runs which has helped. Kucherov on LTIR until game 1 of the playoffs is also both lucky timing and (imo) breaking the rules - or at least goes against the spirit of fair play. Embracing LTIR before the season even starts is one way, but that blocks a teams ability to accrue cap for the deadline.

Clearly Sakic wanted to try to accrue capspace last year for the deadline, but a mountain of injuries put stop to that plan. It was clear to see the plan from the start of the season though, and just because it failed due to injuries doesn't mean that it wasn't a good or creative plan. In the end we were forced to surf LTIR for the rest of the season, leaving minimal capspace at the deadline (meaning only dirt cheap rentals like Dubnyk, Nemeth, and Soderberg) along with causing $1.7m in overages that affect this season.

True enough - and I'm not one of those who thinks any of the past three years' playoff exits had anything to do with one another but I'm also not one to accuse BriseBois of cheating. He used the tools available to him to put a really strong team on the ice plus the organization drafted and developed really well. It may not "feel" like he did things the "right way" but it's his job to give his team the best chance to win and he did that.

I'm interested to see what Joe does this year in terms of getting more of the young guys that have been "marinating" in the AHL onto the team, playing meaningful minutes to keep costs down and maybe even to showcase them for a trade for someone like Forsberg or Hertl who would really round out that top 6. Of course, injuries can derail the best-laid plans so we'll have to cross our fingers on that front.
