Quoting: Caniac2000
Next off-season, Carolina need to re-sign Trocheck, Necas, Kotkaniemi, Bear, Niederreiter... TDA maybe too.... They won't have the cap to do it. Losing Nino STILL doesn't make up for it, and Nino will likely be far cheaper than Zucc, with better defensive skill and similar production...
1. I'm assuming Trocheck and Niederreiter sell themselves off to the highest bidder at free agency.
In this case, it would be Carolina against the other 31 teams in the NHL.
Not exactly fair for Carolina.
2. Bear (2.5 million) and Kotkaniemi (6.1 million) can have their Qualifying Offers.
24 million - 8.6 million = 15.4 million
3. TDA can have his QO as well if Carolina decides to qualify him, which is a big if.
15.4 million - 1 million = 14.4 million.
4. Necas probably signs for somewhere between 5 million and 5.5 million per.
14.4 million - 5.4 million = 9 million
Add in Zuccarello and Carolina is down to 3 million in cap space, assuming Gardiner is still eligible for LTIR.
5. Carolina can sign a bottom 6 centre for cheap or promote somebody like Suzuki/Drury to replace Trocheck.
Keep in mind that Carolina will also still have Aho, Staal and Kotkaniemi as options for the centre ice position.
6. It is possible Gardiner might no longer be eligible for LTIR in 2022-2023 and Minnesota is offering to take him off the books.
In that event, Carolina is only adding about 2 million to its cap hit instead of 6 million.
7. NHL teams are allowed to be 10% over the salary cap during the offseason.
This gives Carolina lots of time to figure out what to do next.
This is manageable for Carolina.
