Good and fair trade for both teams. Sanford was an expiring contract and a bit redundant with STL's forward group, especially with Tarasenko not being traded. Getting a buy-low prospect for him is a nice piece of business to both get some cap room for an actual bench and to swing on a young player. On Ottawa's end, it wouldn't surprise me if Sanford produces well with more ice time and becomes a relatively valuable deadline piece for more picks.

Good trade for both teams. The Blues clear 2M in cap space and get a player who needed a change of scenery while the Senators get the better player right now

Also fun fact, the Senators traded up for Brown in 2016, passing on guys like McAvoy and Chychurn...

Not sure why St.Louis would do this? Brown hasn't proved he's even an NHL player at 23 while Sanford is a consistent 20-30 PT winger.

Mostly cap space as once Sundqvist came back they would be over the cap.

In general idk if he gets a lot of playtime in St. Louis as they got some tough wings to compete against for a job. He may be able to win the 3rd line LW spot but most likely we will see him as 4th line LW. Which is ironic as if he worked harder he probs could have won the 3c spot in Ottawa this year.

Who knows he may even be lost to waivers.

Either way yeah Ottawa won unless Brown has a breakout season. Then again they can retain half and probs get a 3rd or 2nd for Sanford at the deadline

The Blues had to get below the cap somehow, and they did with this. Sanford was on an expiring contract anyhow, and was a bit overpaid to boot. This also gives the Blues some flexibility in regards to the Tarasenko situation. Plus, the package they received for Sanford wasn't that bad all things considered.

Ottawa gets a good depth forward that can produce during the season, and could probably give them some assets at the trade deadline. They also didn't have to give up much to acquire him.

This just seems like a fair deal for all parties involved.

For those that thought St. Louis should never acquire Logan Brown, Blues' GM Doug Armstrong seems to have thought otherwise.

With that said, I think this could be spun as a fair trade for both sides.

Logan Brown desperately needed a change of scenery.

Now, he's able to come home to St. Louis.

Until he signed for league minimum, I had his trade value pegged at a low 2nd.

Zachary Sanford was once drafted as a low 2nd and has already established himself as an NHL player who can compete in the playoffs while Logan has not.

That means Ottawa's price for Logan Brown was met if you look at it that way.

The maximum # of games Logan Brown has played for Ottawa in a given season is 23.

7 Short of the 30 needed to retain the 4th round pick.

Assuming Logan fails to play 30 games for the Blues this season, the Blues will get a 4th round pick, which is what I would have paid for a pending UFA like Sanford.

I voted fair deal smile

Sanford is the product of overusage and the skill around him. I think this is an overpay. Playing with Schenn and Kyrou has inflated what is otherwise a depth piece's stock. Still, Brown has not much value and the 4th may not be sent. if this is a 1 for 1, I have no complaint.

Because if they went into the season with Sundqvist on LTIR they'd be forced to make a trade when he comes off LTIR. Whenever you're forced to make a move...you lose. At least now they got a pick. Vs losing a pick or prospect.

Edit. Sorry missed the previous comment. My bad

I can see why this happened. Fair deal, but if Brown blossoms, STL could make this look like a steal.

Of course, if he doesn't, then OTT becomes the clear winner.

Brown is Ottawa's McCarron, supposed to be a big physical top 6 center when drafted but it's a bust.

Teams need to stop thinking every tall center is the next Getzlaf, most of them skates like trash and won't become anything.

STL. Is now under the cap and doesn’t need to trade Tarasenko before the start of the season.

meh trade for both teams.

can't see sanford staying with ottawa after this season and he'll probably a bottom six journeyman for the rest of his career.

if brown can't beat bozak and joshua for ice time, i think he's off to europe. dude couldn't break through some pretty poor ottawa rosters so i doubt he'll do better on the blues.

The Senators need to save cash for performance bonuses and an eventual Tkachuk signing.

They have been after a top 6 forward all summer, but I assume any deal was contingent on another team taking Tierney and his 4.2M salary (3.5M AAV) to help offset any salary coming in.

I highly doubt Sanford is their top choice for a top 6 forward. I think they had to hit the cap floor, while spending as little as possible. They also needed to add a forward they felt could play in their top 6, because Tkachuk won't be signed anytime soon, and they will start the season without him. This means, they couldn't make a move to add an insured LTIR contract. They needed an actual player.

Whether coincidental or not, Sanford gets them right above the lower limit of the cap. This will require the Senators being a bit flexible with their 13th F & 8th D, but they can mostly ice the same roster they were expected to ice and now be cap compliant. I assume they will sign Ennis to a SPC at 1M, which will give them some additional flexibility. With how close they are to the cap floor, even a five figure difference in an AAV change the combination of players they can add to their roster.

Even if I am wrong about their budget, and they do make further additions, adding Sanford at least removes the additional leverage other teams in trade talks or Tkachuk have with the Senators needing to make a move to hit the cap floor.

As far as Brown goes, it doesn't matter if he becomes a top 6 forward. Sometimes the relationship between a team and a player deteriorates to the point where it is over. That was clearly the case here. There have been rumblings for the last year or so that one or both sides are unhappy. Brown clearly had very little trade value. He also is no longer waiver exempt. There was a reasonable chance that without a trade, the Senators were going to place him on waivers. He is super skilled, but cannot stay healthy, and has questionable drive. Sanford is what he is at this point, but there is that distant chance that the younger Brown could become a real good player for St.Louis.

Sanford is unlikely to be extended in Ottawa because of the long term outlook of their contracts and budgets. I can imagine at the trade deadline when the Senators trade Sanford as a rental, that they will recoup whatever pick they would have gotten for Brown this summer. Assuming the offers for Brown were bad, the Senators made the right move.

This is probably the definition of a win/win trade, but long term there is way more upside for St.Louis.
