Or you overpay a little for your best player when you can afford to and make him really happy. But yeah let's go hard after third round picks!

Well now you present a reason. To keep him happy which ironically I mentioned as a potential reason if you look up top at my first comment.

But overpaying someone JUST to reach the cap floor ALONE is dumb.

If Hughes gets over 7 mil on a bridge thats awful negotiating by the nucks

Yeah, but I think they can sign him for a longish term for that. Hell, sign him for six and promise to try and trade him to the Devils, if the Canucks can't get past the first round before the Devils manage to do that.

The only reason we aren't all saying this is great is because it's Buffalo.

Calling it now, he signed this deal so he can get a one year qualifying at 7.2m and be a UFA in 4 years. Genius. He is seeing what is happening with eichel and is saying he11 to the naw

Not saying you are wrong, but a Genius signing would have been 3M/6M/9M. Same AAV, way better QO, in line with others signings this summer.

That’s not allowed under the cba. It cannot exceed 35% in adjacent years and and the lowest contract year can’t be less than 50% of the highest year.

On the issue of behavioral health and the like, the program we have in place has always been available to former players as well.

Thanks, I forgot about those rules.

Soooo, the maximum on a 6M AAV would be 4M/6M/8M? Ok that pretty close. Genius indeed.

I thought they changed the rules so that the qualifying offer is now based on the AAV rather than the last year.

Well, considering the state of the Sabres, you sure as hell weren't getting him locked up long-term, if anything has been learned from Eichel. That said the money and term looks fine to me
