Description
Quick thoughts:
1) Varly being traded after this year isn't far fetched. Sorokin should prove he is 1A material and could take over the full time role by 2022-23. A cheaper replacement, like Holtby, is familiar with Trotz and Korn. Played his best hockey under them.

2) Bailey being traded? Perhaps. He was left exposed at expansion and could have been lost for nothing. There was no deal in place with Seattle.

3) With these two moves above, the Isles have the room to add a big fish. Forsberg, Gaudreau, Hertl and Barkov (would require more moves and unlikely to hit UFA in my opinion) are all scheduled to be UFA. I arbitrarily chose Forsberg as that guy. He was unhappy with NSH trades this year (Arvidsson/Ellis) and I could see him leaving. Hertl not extending in SJS yet either. He would be a nice choice too.

4) Isles still have cap to fill out LD and another F spot. Why not go for two highly respected vets, former captains, and cupless? This team should be a no brainer to sign with if they aren't in it for the money. Giordano and Pavelski made their money. This team can compete with anyone for a cup. The contracts are still respectable. It's not like they're vet min deals.

5) Isles will have about $21m in space next summer to sign Barzal, Wahlstrom, a LD (Bolduc ready for cheap), RW (Holmstrom/Raty if ready? Golyshev? UFA?), Mayfield (replace with Wilde?), and 3 scratches. Can easily fit everyone.

Trading two 5m players without cap back might be tough, since other teams have cap issues too.

Yes but varly is a beast. Bailey is a different story but i could see a way. If we dont want to take cap back on varly we wont have to

EDM needs a goalie, $5m is not an unreasonable cost for a guy who has arguably been top-5ish in the league the past two years. Is that in part to our system? Yes of course. But Varly has legit value and I am not concerned about being able to trade him in the slightest.

I worked under the assumption CGY is losing Gaudreau to UFA. So they had a spot open on the wings and cap space for it. I think Bailey will be the more difficult of the two to move, but that's not saying he's impossible to. He's still a legit middle-6 player. Two years left. Not completely unreasonable price for 50ish pts per year

This 3rd line is filthy. Such a great line its the goodrow-gourde-coleman line on steroids. Great 2 way, physical, great forcheckers and can score.

Also great job not giving up assets but getting them in return.

The Oilers will be losing 4.5 Koshkinen cap as will Calgary with 6.75m, so I imagine both teams would like to use that cap to sign a longer term UFA or even on their own RFAs. But agree with in, both players have value on the ice and to their contracts.

I love Gio but he will be turning 40. even for 1 year that is probably too much. I think if you are looking to add an Islanders style top 4 LD Ekholm is by far the best on the market

Thinking Gaudreau will be lost to FA is not exactly a great bet, he has been very adamant that he wants to stay in Calgary and even last week at his wedding his mother made a post implying they are hoping for an extension.

I'm not saying he will resign but odds are pretty good

Really like this! That lineup is crazy good. Great work!

Personally I think Varly could fetch a 1st and I think Gio could be at a lower cap hit but other than that this is great
