Would you do it for Smith, Holtz, and a pick?

That’s not a quintet. That’s a trio. They need to draft Jack Hughes and trade for Jack Quinn to get a quintet.

Also, the Canucks (should) accept that in a heartbeat. Then again, it’s Jim Benning, so maybe they wouldn’t.

Unfortunately for the Devils, if Quinn were to ever be traded, New Jersey would have to give up the most compared to other teams simply cause the Canucks would have massive leverage. New Jersey would have to overpay a lot to get him out unless he has a NMC which I doubt will happen

I know everyone thinks of uniting the three Hughes bros but if Canucks were moving Hughes they would take the best offer from all 31 other teams . I don't think Benning would care one bit about making sure the three bothers were together.

Why should the Canucks accept this offer? It makes them considerably worse

In the short-term, yes. Which is why I said that Jim Benning might not do it, since he’s more worried about saving his job than putting the team in the best position to win a Stanley Cup.

But putting the team in a position to win the Stanley cup is what is gonna keep him is job… where’s the logic?

Worse in the long term as well losing Quinn. None of those pieces coming back are as good as hughes

The Canucks clearly aren’t good enough to win now, and they have no cap space over the next few years to improve. This trade gets good value in return for Hughes, spreading talented young and cheap players across the lineup. Plus they free up $6 million + whatever Hughes will make to add other pieces.

The only thing bad about the Canucks are their defense. They have almost a contender like forward group. I’m not sure losing our 1D and top 4 D is exactly going to help us

every NJD post ever.... "VAN shoud except, Ty Smith is a legend" "this will make VAN better..... not right now.... but, later on.... hopefully"
Benning is not trying to save his job, he's trying to win... now. this kicks the can down the road.
VAN is in win now mode as they push for playoffs, they just double downed on that, why would they abandon that? Benning has gone all in and is not looking to kick the can even further down the road
VAN is not trading Hughes, their #1D at the very least, until true value is established.

Exactly. The Canucks won’t do it because they’re trying to win now. I’m saying they should do it, because they aren’t good enough to win now. Without additions, the team as currently constructed cannot win a Stanley Cup. But I know that’s unrealistic, because Benning has dug himself into a hole, and has only one option to keep himself alive for any longer.

I think it's safe to say that Hughes is better than Smith... right now for sure, and potentially in the future as well. so how does that help VAN now or in the future?
in this trade they end up downgrading on their #1 defenseman and the other pieces and pick do not help VAN now or later.

In a sense yes Vancouver will have leverage but I think down the line Quinn will only want to go to NJ. He can sign a bridge deal with a modified NTC. In the end I feel bad for Vancouver because if Luke was drafted by the Canucks I’d have the same fear of jack eventually leaving. I just think in the end it’ll happen but no one knows how
