He does not have a contract to retain. And if they did a sign and trade, what, Minnesota retains $4-5m per year on a 6+ year deal? With $14m in dead money in 2022-24? I am not seeing a viable retention scenario here.

Well yes it assumes MIN would sign and trade. He wants a 3-4 year deal, so let’s just say MIN concedes and signs him to a 4x8, then retains 50%.

You’d have a lot of suitors for 4 years of Kaprizov at 4M a year.

There are only, what 10-12, teams who could even afford Kaprizov at $8-9M a year. IMO that jumps to 20+ teams if it’s $4M, which in turn drives up demand and therefore price.

I keep reading that NJ needs NHL wingers, so I thought these pieces might fit.

It's too early to tell what the winger situation will look like in NJ, there are so many forward prospects competing for just 2-3 spots.
I have really high hopes for guys like Clarke and Foote to make a significant impact this year. And then there's Holtz and Mercer to push for those spots the following, who could end up making the roster on opening night against the Blackhawks...
Seems to me Wild and Devils don't make for good trade partners at this moment.
