Ottawa makes another BIG move with San Jose

Description
Some ACGMs pointed out an article claiming Brännström is not in favour of getting a top 4 spot on the Sens, which I think is a mistake because there is so much potential there. Shawn Simpson tweeted that Logan Brown refuses to play for the Sens again and would rather go to Sweden if he's not moved. Kevin Kurz reported that Hertl is one of the many unhappy Sharks that do not want Evander Kane back for next season.

In an attempt to fix 3 players' situations, this is the trade I came up with.

How is he too old? He's 27, would be 33 by the very end of the extension, and you need good vets to win a Cup.

1. Kevin Kurz also said that what the Sharks are looking for in any Hertl trade are a 1st round pick + a top prospect that can either play centre or replace Merkley or Burns on the blue-line.

This is more than what the Sharks are asking for.

2. Hertl has a 3 team trade list and there are 30 other teams in the NHL besides Ottawa and San Jose.

There's at least a 90% chance that Hertl does not have Ottawa on that list.

he will be 28 on November 12 and OTT is still at the very least 2 years away from consistently competing for a playoff spot yet alone a cup which would make him 30, too old and would cost too much to trade for, OTT passes.

2 1sts, a 2nd, and Brown who refuses to play; so despite being a former 1st rounder, isn't worth nearly that on the market. This isn't Eichel return.

1. You're not giving the Sharks their exact ask and Brannstrom isn't a "top prospect"

2. You could say that about any team.

OTT is not trading unprotected 1st and some of their best prospect for a guy who is going to start to decline when they are about ready to compete.

That's what Kurz said the sharks want. Kurz is not a great source for team facts as the sharks are notoriously quiet about personnel moves.

1. If Brannstrom is not a "top prospect", then neither is Logan Brown or Alex Formenton.

I will point out that defencemen usually take more time than forwards for developing and blossoming into quality NHL players.

It explains why Erik Brannstrom has taken more time than someone like Josh Norris, who was drafted just 4 spots apart from Brannstrom in 2017.

2. IMO, there's more reason to believe that a team like Boston, Tampa or Vegas would be on Hertl's trade list instead of Ottawa.

The org is notoriously quiet about any personnel movement. They respect their players privacy to the extreme. I personally do not like Kurz but Sheng Peng is coming up with big stories and Pashelka is pretty decent. I still stick with Friedman for legitimate facts though.

Peng is my go-to for any and all sharks needs though as he understands advanced statistics and scores excellent interviews with team staff

1. I never said Brown and Formenton were top prospects. Brown wants out and Formenton is good enough to fill the extra needed value imo. Brannstrom is not a Drysdale or a Seider, which is what I think when I hear "top prospect." Brannstrom is closer to a Guhle or a Harley which I would think is a tier below. Maybe I'm wrong in my definition. And yeah, D definitely take longer than F to develop.

2. Yeah, but if Hertl wants out badly enough, the list becomes completely irrelevant and he'll accept a trade to wherever Wilson finds a good deal. And even if every team had an equal chance; Tampa, Vegas, Colorado, etc. all have a less than 10% chance of being on his no-trade list and then the site becomes irrelevant for theorizing major deals.

It's all in good fun.

Hertl is two months older than Connor Brown.

I agree about taking Formenton out of the trade.

I think a five year extension is best, but I'd go six if I had to

Ottawa is two years from serious contention, but they're getting close to the playoffs now. Hertl aged 30 when the Sens are serious contenders is fine. Throwing out the age of the final season is misleading.

Protect the first, it's a legitimate request.

I don't care if Hertl has a three team trade list, this is all speculation here anyway.

1. People have different opinions on what a top prospect is.

Mine involves one of the following as being a top prospect:

A. Any U18 hockey player that has yet to be drafted in the NHL, but is definitely worthy of being drafted somewhere in the first round.

B. Any former 1st round pick between the age of 18 and 27 who might be taken in the first round again if re-inserted into the draft.

C. Any prospect that has yet to play in the NHL full-time but would satisfy A or B.

2. If I'm in Hertl's shoes, I would think the 3 team trade list will come in handy.

It gives him a say on where he's traded and would allow him to be traded to his 3 favourite NHL teams/cities, aside from San Jose.

When Buffalo was trying to trade Taylor Hall, Hall had an NMC and would only allow a trade to Boston.

Hall wanted to dictate the name of the team that would acquire him and he didn't care what Buffalo got back in return.

If I'm Hertl, I would want the same thing when San Jose will try trading me.

Alex Formenton is easily worth a 1st round pick in Ottawa's eyes.
They probably wouldn't even trade him for a "first round pick"

I see three first round picks and a reclamation project here.

1. You're not giving the Sharks their exact ask and Brannstrom isn't a "top prospect".

Really depends. Based on polls I have conducted among Sens fans, Brannstrom is still top-5 if you consider Norris and Stutzle graduated.

Or if you look at this list from April for example, you see that Button still had him 19th :

https://www.tsn.ca/detroit-red-wings-blue-chippers-montreal-canadiens-cole-caufield-headline-top-75-prospects-list-1.1617205

Plenty of people around or IN THE NHL are still high on Erik Brannstrom.

I think your definition is too stiff or "shifted"?. Drysdale and Seider are ELITE prospects, they are 2 of the best 3 prospects in the whole NHL. They are blue chip prospects who will be significant players, we just don't know how good yet. Guhle and Harley are definitely top prospects. Guhle is #2 Montreal's prospect according to their fanbase, after Caufield (if not graduated). Harley is definitively the Stars top prospect
