I do disagree with your Petry vs Dumba evaluation. Petry has twice finished in the top 20 for Norris voting. DUMBA never has. Awards aren’t everything, but it says something. If they were the same age I would not trade what Petry has done so far for what Dumba has not yet achieved
NHL Awards are a joke, especially the Norris in particular. They basically boil down to a popularity contest between where they play (market), for what team (national popularity of team), and finally player name recognition. If Petry and Dumba had identical seasons and both were up for the Norris. Petry's going to win it every single time because he plays for Montreal, a top 5 market, versus Minnesota, the 15th largest market. Simply due to media coverage.
That has no bearing on whether Dumba or Petry is the better player. A team's overall roster talent can play a large role in that as well. Petry has simply played with better talent than Dumba has for the entire lengths of their respective careers to date. That matters, naturally Petry has had a better chance to put up points. Up until the additions of Fiala and Kaprizov, the best players Dumba had on the PP were Parise, Koivu and to a lesser extent Staal. Good players, but not anywhere near the threat necessary to stop teams from double teaming and harassing Dumba before he can get a shot off. Dumba has been effectively shutdown and neutered the last few years because teams knew they could cheat, shutdown Dumba, and not have to worry about anyone else.
But even since Fiala and Kaprizov came onto the scene Dumba's either been recovering from a massive injury or not concerned about his offensive game. Make no mistake, if Dumba focuses on his offense again teams won't be able to cheat and just focus squarely on him anymore. There are bigger fish to worry about now.
As I said before, I've watched Dumba for years, and more than enough of Petry to know what I'm talking about. Petry may get the recognition, but Dumba's the better player and overall talent.
Case and point. Mikko Koivu is widely considered by the players, coaches, and front office management of the NHL to have been the 2nd best shutdown centerman during the 2010's behind only Patrice Bergeron. The highest Mikko ever finished in Selke voting was 3rd, and he only did that once.
Bergeron has had far better talent around him his entire career as well. If you swapped Bergeron and Koivu for their careers they probably wind up where the other one does. Same could be said for Petry and Dumba. I guarantee if Dumba was playing in Montreal for the entire breadth of his career, he's the one who garners those nominations not Petry if their careers were reversed.
