Two late first round picks, Strome, Chytil, are decent and are close to the value of Eichel, but when you ask for that much retention Gauthier, and Schneider are not sufficient compensation. This is not conjecture this is just fact. Neither of them have a ceiling high enough to equal $12,500,000.

That is more than Caggiula's, Asplund's and Pysyk's combined salaries this year.
I would imagine collectively they will play about 164 games this year.
It is a decent offer, but the Ranger's would need to add more than just Gauthier, and Schneider.
Let me repeat for at least the fourth time, it is a decent offer, it is the retention that destroys it.
Remove the retention, take out Gauthier, and Schneider, add Trouba to balance the salaries, add Miller from Buffalo to give NYR a 2nd pairing D-man, then I think it makes a lot more sense.
