Drouin going on LTIR any time after the trade deadline (especially near or around the end of the season) does nothing for Montreal though. In that situation they will have paid most of his $5.5M and cannot trade for a replacement.
Duchene is a risk, but I don’t understand the comment about not taking him “under any circumstances “.
Tarasenko would be a risk, Eichel would be a risk, Trading for Hertl without an extension would be a risk etc etc etc. But at some point if you want to try to go over the top you have to take risks. Otherwise you are stuck in the middle forever.
Tampa Bay giving up the draft picks they did for Goodrow and Coleman was risky too. (To be clear, though, I am not saying Montreal is as close to the Cup as TB was when they made those moves. I am just saying sometimes taking a risk is worth it).
