Why are the Devils trading him exactly if they have no 3rd liner that would be any better? It's an expiring contract. Subban isn't great anymore, but slotting helps him for the 3rd line. If you can get an expert penalty killer, sure, but this is just making lines for the sake of it. Let Bahl cook in the AHL....

Because he's a better player than the bottom pairing minutes with no PP time he'll get on the Devils. The return would have to be worth it of course, but the Devils have always tried to get value from their expiring players and they aren't good enough to start keeping self-rentals when you can get a pick+decent prospect instead.

Some of these are way too much for Subban, no way should the Pens trade POJ for a twice retained Subban.

That may be true when the Devils were rebuilding... but having a player that could, at his best now, a top 4 RHD, playing on the 3rd line might give this team a chance to step forward. We can only trade away expiring guys so often until we actually TRY to be good.

The Devils also don't have anyone ripe yet from those young D. This could still be rushing Bahl. If he doesn't work out? We go to Jaros? We rush someone else? Is a defender that available in free agency really worth the difference on what Subban can offer now minus the actual value of whatever the Devils get? All that while eating $4.5m and sharing the value we get from Subban with whomever eats the next $2.25m so many of those teams can afford them?

Just let him finish out here until the deadline when the team knows what they are this year...By February MAYBE someone is ready from the AHL or you acquire a guy that is too rich from another team that needs to clear room too.

Nowhere in this message was deadline mentioned. I'm looking at this as a now deal otherwise. Deadline, everything is on the table for expiring guys.

There's no reason for teams like these to pay a premium for it not to be a deadline dead. They don't need Subban to make the playoffs. But we're probably not getting a guy like Helleson or Niemelä+ at the deadline.

Subban would go for what MAF went for when he was traded to Chicago if no retention was involved.

They might get a 5th round pick for 50% retention but even that probs wont happen

In any sense they would probs have to pay a team to take him even with retention

Leafs would not entertain that for one second. To be honest J can’t see pk being traded to any contending team. The value of the retention is worth more than the player.

I think TDL is implied with all these PK trades. As a Devils fan, I don't see any point in trading him before January at the earliest.

Vegas was tight against the cap and had to move out salary (and had Lehner there).
Devils are nowhere close to cap ceiling.

So I don't see these are similar in any way.

Of all the guys listed here, POJ would not be the reach, imo.
I'd see Helleson, Moore above him over long-term.

Almost everyone here is close to a reach for Subban and that includes POJ, Subban has little value I'd imagine, might get a 2nd round pick for a 50% retained PK, can't see any teams giving a good prospect for him, he isn't putting any team over the top.

Most of these are long shot prospects.
None are sure things.
And if guys like Risto and Savard can get 1st round+ I don’t see why Subban could not return this much.
