Description

If bought out in 2022-2023, the cap hit would last until 2029-2030. I think it is important to conserve cap space but does it really make sense to have dead cap until then?

Here it is year-by-year:

It definitely is something to think about however I would use the cap space wisely if the rangers are going to do it. I personally think Trouba has value but that's not a common belief on Capfriendly. Most think he is negative value.

I really do feel Zibanejad (who is rumored to be locked up right now) and Fox are going to come in as discounts (at least im hoping). Plus the cap will go up 1 mill each year, as rumored.

Buying Trouba out is ridicules. He is a good 2nd paid D that plays physical, stands up for his teammates and is a good leader. He is over payed....big deal. He brings more value to the team than just numbers. Whatever he is "over payed" is livable, even in a salary cap era.

no I totally agree with you. I think his value is brought down bc of his contract. I still love Trouba! But if we are pressed for cap to sign guys like Zibby, Fox, maybe even Strome, Kravstov, Kakko, and later down the line Miller and Lafreniere... this may have to be the route to go down. Plus guys like Schneider and Lundqvist will likely take his place. They were drafted for a reason.

Don't think you have to worry about a buy out for two more years then money needs to be moved. He may accept a trade at that point who knows.

I could see Trouba traded to Carolina next season if Lundkvist pans out as a top-4 guy, actually. He's locked up for his entire prime and he'd probably have some interesting renaissance potential next to Slavin. If Bear and DeAngelo perform up to their capability, however, probably isn't a necessary move.

You try to trade him first. But like others are saying, he is "only" overpaid by about 2mil per year. He is a really solid RHD that would be on the #1 pairing for most teams. His offense numbers are down because of Fox/DeAngelo/Jones taking most the PP time, with Lundkvist probably doing it again this year. Unfortunately they couldn't predict Fox to be this amazing when they signed Trouba. But he's still good and physical in the D zone and on the penalty kill.

His first year was definitely "bad", but he was "good" last year. I expect more of the same. Just don't expect the offense to go up like it was in WPG. At 8mil he was definitely signed for that 50point year. But, enter Fox

Your post is saying buy him out NOW, which I think is a crazy idea. In 2 or 3 years, when they have a better idea of how good Lundquist and Schneider can be, because it's not a given they will develop, then they can think of trading him or buying out if its absolutely necessary. But for this season and next, at least, Trouba is a must keep. He brings too much to the team.

You show the buy out costs as if he were bought out now, so it appears you are asking if buying him out now makes sense, and the answer is NO.
