Barkov to the Red Wings

Description
I wanted to see what this roster could look like next year with the only newcomer to the organization being Barkov. It will be tough to tear him from Florida being that he's their captain, they are contenders right now, and Florida has no state income tax, but I think we could have the cap space to do it if he's open to becoming the highest paid player in the league.

You'll see a good amount of the roster below banks on our top prospects taking steps this season and being NHL-ready by next season. These include Veleno, Raymond, Berggren, and McIsaac namely.

There's a bit of a logjam at center here, I'm not sure who the organization prefers moving to the wing, but I believe they like Veleno on the wing more than Ras. I'm not sure how I feel about Veleno getting fourth line minutes and assignments, but there are who I believe to be better players ahead of him on the wings.

The Zadina AAV is assuming he has a solid year and makes big strides, but doesn't have an insane breakout year. Hopefully it ends up being very team friendly in the following years, he remains an RFA on expiry.

I brought back Leddy, Greiss, and Fabbri and didn't shop around the league in order to keep this focused on the Barkov pickup. Not sure how correct I got their AAVs, but I don't think they can be judged too much before this upcoming season even starts. Cossa should spend the 22-23 season as the Griffins starter in the AHL.

In year 1 after signing Barkov (22-23), this team is young but certainly contending for a playoff spot. In year 2, they're a lock for the playoffs, and in the next 5 years after that I'd say they are firmly in their contention window, hopefully with Cossa and Ned sharing the net.

Let me know what you think but don't grill me too hard, this is my first time doing one of these.

You don't think after a season in the AHL, a season in the SHL, and a full season in the NHL in 21-22 that Seider could be a top pairing D in 22-23? I think we all know that, long term, Hronek is a 2nd pair guy and Seider is a first pair guy. I think it's very realistic that by the time training camp concludes before next season, Seider has solidified himself in the top pair.

So long as you don’t make any other long term contracts and are financially responsible it’s a good move imo.

That is a scorching hot take. He won SHL Defenseman of the year as a 19/20 year old. Do you think they would have given him that award if he was "carried"?

I think it's reasonable to be reserved when predicting prospects, but by all accounts Seider is the best one the Wings have had in a long time. Like I said, I don't think it's unrealistic at all for him to be top pairing two seasons from now.

Go watch his tape then. Funny how you're the only person I've ever seen be this low on Seider. The entirety of the hockey community must be seeing something different than you are.

prolly because they don't actually see him play and have any worthwhile opinions? Éric Gélinas drove the vast majority of Seider's points last year and Seider was a pylon at WC vs teams not named Italy or Norway

I watched him a lot in GR he will be a top pairing defenseman by the start of his sophomore year. He won’t put up 60 points but he will be a top pair guy.

His size and strength for one. Sure he made rookie mistakes but that’s because he was a rookie And he continued to improve. He will be a top pairing defenseman on MOST teams in 1-2 years.

Honest question; what has Zadina done to earn that kind of a contract? Surely Yzerman is a better negotiator than that

I hear you. If Zadina was up for a contract right now, there's no way he's making that money. I'm banking on him taking a big stride this year on the top line with Vrana and Larkin. 50-55 points this season (while keeping up his consistently improving two-way play) would be around what I think Yzerman would need to see in order to pay him the $4.4M I have in my mock.

I like the idea of signing Barkov but I don't think the amount needs to be that high to get him.

If both Raymond and Berggren improve so much that they're lock-ins on the roster then I'd move Suter to 2LW and play Veleno between the two swedes. Fabbri would have to be traded and Stephens should be 4C. Erne and Rasmussen would have to settle for 4th line wing with Smith as a backup.

I actually like that lineup a lot. This TDL would be a good opportunity to trade Fabbri, he's been very solid for us but doesn't seem like a core piece to me. Any concerns with inexperience on that third line?

What would be your estimated price to get Barkov to come up north? I knew $14M felt on the high side when I posted this, but Michigan income tax would take around $600K of that so I was trying to take that in consideration, as well as the fact that the Wings would not be the only bidders.

Given that the assumption is that the kids improve considerably I have no problems with them playing on a 3rd line together. Lucas will have been on a pro contract for 4 years by then and he's the one with least experience of the three.

With the cap being flat I don't think any team will have room to offer more than 10-11 million and what will decide is how Aleks likes his role and the direction the team is going. I can see him liking the idea of taking Detroit to a cup in the not too distant future.

I hope you're right. If the Wings miss out on Shane Wright, I would think Barkov has to be one of our best options at 1C as we exit the rebuild, even if it means having almost no chance at winning the Bedard/Michkov lottery in '23.

I'd take the sure bet if we can get him, rather than try our luck in the lottery again, which has had no love for us at all.

That is just not true. They have 14,5M (15,5M if the cap goes up), and they only need to sign Barkov and a few roster players.

People only talk about cap problems because the Panthers would like to make upgrades to their roster come next offseason, but don't have the money for that without shipping a guy like Hornqvist out

'A few roster players' being half their forwards and a few defensemen. The thing about a players contract ending is that it doesn't create the full cap space. He needs to be replaced by an at minimum league minimum salary. Try doing your math the right way and they only have 4 of Barkov's 5 left to sign him with.

From all the players coming off the books outside of Barkov, they are only creating about $4,000,000 of space. Add the projected cap raise of $1,000,000 and you have about $5,000.000 of space created. Verhaeghe's raise already on the books alone is 3.1 of that. Yandle's buyout increases by 3 million too. They are underwater by a mil before even starting.

Why would you not count Barkov's deal as coming off the books, too? It's not like they're going to be paying him 10,5M from his new deal AND 5,9M from his old.

All that math stuff is pointless: Capfriendly literally does it for you. They will have, at minimum, 14,5M to sign Barkov and ~6 roster players, most of them playing on their ELCs.

Sure, do Barkov's deal. They have 4 million in room to sign Barkov to a 10 millon dollar deal. They are still underwater. His deal doesn't create room when you are trying to use it to re-sign him.

Okay, your math does not check out.

At this moment, the Cats have almost 4M in cap space (after they've sent at least two players to the minors, which they need to do)

Next year, they will have 8 contracts expiring combining 16M. Then you subtract the 3,1M of Verhaeghe's raise, the 3M from Yandle's buyout and add 1M from Luongo's recapture penalty expiring. You're left with ~11M.

So, for the next offseason, the Panthers have that 11M plus the 3M+ they have right now and the 1M from cap going up. That's over 15M to get Sasha and a few other players (6 or 7, which includes guys on their ELCs like Lundell and Denisenko, who do not currently show up on Capfriendly)

Funny, that's exactly how much Capfriendly shows the Panthers having...

And look where the leaves you. You has as much room as this Red Wings AGM is offering Barkov before you sign 6-7 (really they need a 22 man roster minimum, not a 20 man one, so that number is actually 8-9) other guys. They are in trouble.
