Why would either player sign these deals? Hughes must believe he's equal to Makar, why would he take more term and less money? You want 8 years it's going to be 10+. And Petterson is better than Barzal so why would he sign the same deal? Hell, KK getting 6.1 on one year jacks up the price for you. Maybe 7.5 x 2 and he'll sign but the next one is 8*11+

So what? Hughes isn't on a good team, he's asked to do it all on the defence. Regardless he absolutely is going to see himself as a potential Norris winner and leaving all that money on the table when his closest Rival just got 9 million would he silly for him to do. I bet he sings for 2*7 and Petterson 2*7.5 and then want big money when those deals are done. Why wait?

Makar just got 9 for what 5 years? Hughes was neck and neck with Makar in the Calder race and then his team fell apart last season. He's going to bet on himself becoming a Norris contender and then will expect to get big money. Signing long term and leaving major money on the table isn't going to happen.

Hughes would argue Makar, Jones, Nurse and Werenski extensions, VAN would argue stats, specifically defensive numbers. on a 5- 8 year term i think hughes gets 8-9 million. it's too much but it's the price of d-men.

Pettersson i think actually gets less, with the Barzal comparable as well as Svechnikov and Couterier signing for under 8 i suspect Pettersson would get 7-8 million for 5-8 years.

bridge deals for 2-4 years would have to be less than those... in the range of 4-6 million

While I'm high on Hughes and believe he was put into way too many minutes against other teams top lines, he has not earned the right to put in the same position as some of these other contracts in the 8.5-9.5 million range. All of those players have shown to be a lot more reliable defensively while still putting up points. Last year was a really bad year for Vancouver as a whole with COVID giving pretty much no pre season and not even time for a practice over the 1st half of the shortened season. This impacted Van more than others especially on Defense where half of the Defense was not there the previous season. I believe Hughes ends up on a 3-4 year contract in the 5-6 mill range with the final season being around 8.5 so he will have a high qualifying offer as an RFA. Pettersson May get a longer Contract but again a good chance he does 3 years at 7.5 range with the last year of his contract in the 9.5 range for a qualifying offer as a RFA. With both of them running the same agent there is a lot of speculation they will both end up with the same Term of 3 yrs with a high pay in the last year to give them negotiating power for their last RFA contract.

Yeah he definitely can't do it alone. That's for sure. However beyond him their defence is garbage so it's not all his fault.
