It's not in his best interest to sign long term. It makes sense for him to want to see that the team is on the upswing and willing to make the financial commitments necessary to support that. From an individual perspective as well, taking the team factor out of it, he probably shouldn't sign a long term deal based on his results. He leads the league over the last two years in individual high danger chances and xGoals (both 5v5 and all situations), but the production doesn't reflect that. Seems on the precipice of an explosion. Short term is the way I'd go if I were him.

You act like a player can’t sign a longterm deal and then ask for a trade later on. An 8 x 8 is more than fair or even a 7 x 7.5. He won’t be a PPG player ever and shouldn’t get 10+ Mill.

2-3 year bridge could make for a massive payday down the line.

      I know. That's the point I'm making.

Right when you also need to sign Norris, Brannstrom, Sanderson, Formenton and Stutzle great idea

Obviously not for the Sens, I meant from Brady’s perspective. In 3 years he’d likely be in line for a massive payday.

For me, I wouldn't want the Devils to trade for Brady. Would cost a lot (like Holtz and then some) and I'm seemingly not rating him as highly as the rest of the community here.
Not sure I'd do Holtz for Tkachuk one for one tbh but what do I know?

The guy leads the league in hits and shots on goal. Would be the perfect linemate for Hughes

In 3 years , you’re hoping the team would be competing. You don’t want a player with leverage to be a distraction and threaten to leave in free agency. Also him being an RFA in 3 years would technically become a rental if he takes the QO and would lower his value tremendously. Doesn’t sound like a good idea . 2 year deal or 7-8. Otherwise trade him

I hear you, but at some point OTT needs to commit and pay your players. Let’s say the core is Chabot/Tkachuk/Norris and they take up 30 mil of cap. There’s nothing bad about that if they’re in their prime over the next 5 years and they are producing like it.

Trading Tkachuk just tells the league and the fan base that they will never compete. Rather they’re only interested in doing it on the cheap. The window is over the next 5 years and it’s time to ramp up IMO. They’ve got the pieces.

Not if his production stays in this range. If he hits 70+ in the next 2-3 years then sure. I just think he will be a 60pt player

      The core is likely

Tkachuk, Stutzle, Batherson, Norris, Chabot, Sanderson, Gustavsson.

Pinto, Brannstrom, JBD can also enter the conversation soon

Who knows, it may not be a money issue, he could just want to pick where he wants to play. Rangers could have the same issue with Laf in a few years. It sucks, but what can you do, just gotta trade them and move on as it’s their right to decide.

I think we need to stop demonizing guys for not wanting to sign till the end of their damn career with one team. It’s literally their right to do so. If it happened to the Rangers I wouldn’t be happy, but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to control where you play and how much you make it you can. They don’t owe anyone anything.

My issue is he has not done anything to earn a big pay day. Yes he MIGHT develop into a high end player worth $8M a year but he also might not. The Sens give him $8M x 8 and if he becomes what he should he earns his contract. If not the sens are on the hook for a bad contract. NHL GMs should be more hard nosed with their young Kids they need to earn the contract. Bridge deal or let him sit. Problem is most GMs have no balls

I hear you, but a “core” is 3-4 players. I see that list and I see a ton of high end players that will be in their prime over the next 5 years. Decisions will need to be made about which stay and which go.

This is why I didn’t really like their approach to the draft this year. Maybe Boucher is Tkachuk 2.0. But more than likely they spent a #10 pick on a guy who will top out as a 3rd liner right when they need cheap, top end talent.

(BTW, I appreciate the level convo you provide on other posts so I’m trying to return the favor)

Hit counts are rather irrelevant to me, its likely an indicator that you're just losing the puck a lot whenever you're on the ice.
As for the shots on goal, that could might as well be Tatar or any of the younger guys in a few years time like Holtz or Sharangovich etc. Also great to pair with Hughes.
I'm trying not to hate on Brady too much, he's a good player and I do like him. I just don't love him.

Think there's another team out there that makes for a better fit.

From my understanding from this post, the issue is the potential that the player simply does not want to sign long term with the team. If that’s the case it doesn’t really matter cause at some point they’ll be gone.

Do whatever it takes to keep Brady, OTT is building for the playoffs and that guy is gonna shine there

That’s why they reached for Sanderson at #5 in 2020 and Boucher this year

But gotta make it there first tho

I don't actually think the difference in value would be that chasmic if that were the case. It should be in theory, but Brady Tkachuk being dangled at the trade deadline would have GM's salivating and I'm sure someone would overpay immensely for that rental.

No he shouldn’t. Matthew had a 77pt season when he signed that deal, Brady hasn’t come close. Also 3 years would be a repeat of the Stone deal and if he doesn’t like it, he can take the qualifying offer and walk himself to free agency. That’s bad asset management. It’s 2 year bridge or 7-8 year longterm. If he doesn’t budge , you trade him, I don’t care

That's the "issue" with the Tkachuk family. They want to maximize their career earnings, which is their right.

That's what will make it incredibly difffuclt for Ottawa and even Calgary to keep their Tkachuk's long-term.

I think Brady wants at least Matthew's deal of 7x3, if not a smidge more. Bragging rights in the family. Then for the Flames they are close to having to offer Tkachuk Mark Stone money to keep him around long-term.

Wouldn’t be shocked if Matthew is asking for around Marner money
