Moving Kane Hertl

Créé par: lrw2105

Description
Revisions/feedback much appreciated, especially on the lines of -

What other contenders would Hertl waive his NTC for? Who would be interested in a longterm sign (therefore a bigger package) versus rental? What might a package from BOS look like? or NYR if that is enough of a contender for Hertl?

If the NHL won't let SJS terminate Kane's contract, who else might be willing to trade for him 50% retained? What might their package be?

In all these moves, operating on the assumption that SJS wants high picks and interesting prospects, especially at positions of need, and is willing to take on useful roster players even if somewhat overpaid, since they are/should be in retool mode
Transactions
1.
SJS
  1. Bowers, Shane
  2. Compher, J.T.
  3. Helleson, Drew [Liste de réserve]
  4. Choix de 1e ronde en 2023 (COL)
Détails additionnels:
In this universe, Hertl only willing to be traded to BOS, COL, FL, TBL, and FL/TBL don't have the space, while BOS not willing to move two B+ prospects who play positions of need in SJS' system or an unprotected 1st, even/especially a '23 one.
COL
  1. Hertl, Tomas
Détails additionnels:
Hertl willing to sign a 6.5x8 extension in COL, as they wouldn't do trade for a rental.
2.
SJS
  1. Byron, Paul
  2. Harris, Jordan [Liste de réserve]
  3. Ylönen, Jesse
Détails additionnels:
SJS gets a decent if overpaid roster player for a very good but problem one, and two interesting prospects for the future.
MTL
  1. Kane, Evander (3 500 000 $ retained)
Détails additionnels:
MON makes a cap neutral move taking on a good but problem player and moving 2 interesting but not blue chip prospects, one of whom may not have ever been willing to sign w/MON.

MTL isn't touching Kane, even with such a sweet deal to get him.

Mtl doesn't need a winger and doesn't have the cap to spend on another one moving forward.
Even then, I don't see any team giving up assets for Kane. The only way to avoid buying him out (if you can't terminate him), is to pay another team to do it.

Agree, no asset for Kane from Montréal, SJ will have to trow at least a 2nd rd to get rid of him.
Moreover, Byron is to be used as LTIR for at least until Christmas period, we need LTIR money for the overcap here, so he's not going anywhere for now.

I guess in general I'm curious what the realistic return for Hertl is. It doesn't sound like an early season trade is imminent, so if he is moved it will be closer to the end of the calendar year or up to the deadline which does affect the return IMO.

I look at Hall and while you can't do a 1-for-1 comparison since Buffalo didn't have much leverage and Hertl is arguably a bigger impact player than Hall, but just for argument's sake...

Hall got a 2nd + Anders Bjork. If we use that even as some kind of comparison, I'd think we're clearly starting with a first, but what does SJ want? Do they want a replacement? Futures? I feel like the Hertl trade is hard to really gauge at this point.

Hall is a closer comparison than you might think because Hertl only has a 3 team list. If he doesn't open up for other destinations, or agree to an extension, the price could come down significantly.
Not Taylor Hall bad, but not what SJ might like or what his actual value might be.

Yeah, it's been hard to gauge Hertl's value, as so much seems dependent on how much he's willing to flex his 29 team NTC to a chosen contender, the timing of the trade, and the willingness of a chosen team(s) to sign him to a longterm extension ... Hall/BUF->BOS probably closer to the template than Jones/CBJ->CHI ... maybe something between the two Hall trades? Hall to ARI versus Hall to BOS? Also later in season means less need for SJS to take cap back, and teams' injuries making them more desperate .... but also the risk of Hertl getting injured.

Makes sense that Byron's LTIR too valuable atm for this to make sense. Was thinking of a team that seems willing to risk the PR repercussions of players w/character issues (like the Mailloux choice) who has a roster player who recently cleared waivers so as to make enough of the risk-benefit balance make sense in their favor. CAR could fit w/their willingness to take on Deangelo if they hadn't just made their fwd addition and placed Gardiner on LTIR ... Kane's an interesting conundrum if his contract isn't terminated. At 50%, such good value could see a team theoretically biting.

My biggest thing with Kane is that he's a drama magnet. Gambling and debt, abortion payoffs, messy divorce where he's now claiming domestic abuse, teammates want nothing to do with him, and that's on top of several lesser issues over his career.

Nobody is going to risk bringing a 30 year old with all of that baggage on board with that contract. He might get a league minimum somewhere if his current contract is out of the equation, but even that's a risk I'd rather avoid.

Yeah, I could see a similar situation. I think Hertl is worth and should get more in trade, but I don't think it's going to be the kind package some are expecting. I think a 1st + good prospect is about what to expect, maybe a decent roster player since I'm sure money will need to change hands.
