With an extension, you're giving up both 1sts + for Hertl

With an extension? EASILY. He'll get a 1st+A tier prospect + late round pick as a rental.

I think the bidding war for Hertl will be insane and you'll be going against the Bruins, Rangers, etc. I realize that he is a rental, but that package is light to me and I love Ylonen.

No way the Habs could resign Hertl, and sign Suzuki too.

he has 3 team trade list....there wont be as big of a bidding war for a guy who can hand pick the team he wants to go to.

Question here, I like Hertl and all but what sense does it make to give up the trade compensation for him then sign him to the exact same contract that KK's OS is for? Why not just match the OS keep KK and keep all the prospects, picks and players it would cost to get Hertl for the slight upgrade he would be. I know everyone is mad at KK for signing the OS and he is not worth the contract right now and he may never be but at least you are keeping yourself in the 22 draft cause no team is going to trade Montreal a top 6 center right now for just one 1st. They are going to make Montreal pay through the nose.

That is fair, he can somewhat choose where he goes, but when that clause was negotiated he wanted to stay in San Jose. Now he wants out of San Jose so to facilitate that he may in fact waive to a team not in his preferred 3. As an example, Nate Schmidt waived to come to Winnipeg even though we weren't on his initial list.

I think San Jose will know who those 3 teams are, but they're going to have a league wide bidding war to drive up the price and then see if Hertl will waive to go to the best offer. Just my opinion obviously. Maybe a 1st, roster player and top prospect is enough? I think instead of the 2nd and 3rd you need to include a middle 6 forward. I'm really high on Ylonen but maybe SJ wants a better prospect too? IDK.

I tihnk the big players will still be in on him....Boston, Rangers etc but if he wants out, you have to think he has a very good idea of where he wants to go and what he values in terms of fit. I dont see him being a hired gun for 1 year and hitting UFA, probably wants to extned where he goes.
