Yes but then his qualifying offer has to be 6.1M. It will be interesting to see what they do. Clearly Carolina has to think that he will be that good in the future, and I think they want to screw over Montreal cap wise.

Doesn't mean they HAVE to sign him over 6.1m. I imagine if KK has a bad season he'd take less

I doubt it… also, I believe you have to sign him at the qualifying offer unless he wants less. I just don’t see him getting under 6.1M especially on Montreal. On Carolina I can see him wanting less though.

Waddell hasn't thought this thru. He just naturally thinks the Habs resign him.

But if the Habs don't, than the Canes get the screwed over, KK and his agent would be dumb to sign early and get a cheaper value. KK would wait to see if the QO gets tendered or not. If not he becomes one of the youngest UFA in history.

Here is the thing that keeps getting overlooked by those who think this means KK wants out. KK and his agent know the position Montreal is in with their centers. They know that IF Montreal does not match then the Habs are screwed for this season down the middle. They had to have had that conversation prior to signing the OS. So KK and his agent both know that the most likely scenario is that the Habs match and he remains with the team. The odds do not favor Montreal letting KK go for next to nothing.

Agreed, he won't sign less in montreal, but I think he will in Carolina. Read my description on my recent AGM

Will do! I don’t think he likes Montreal honestly. A fresh start in Carolina with other Finnish guys would help.

KK will also have arbitration rights next summer along with the $6 Q.O. requirement. So either the Habs or Canes will get pushed into a corner which will cause a player lockout or KK becoming an UFA.

Next to nothing, a .50 ppg 3rd line center with a 6 million cap hit has no trade value. so getting a 1st and 3rd is great value.

If the Habs keep him and have to resign him long term at a similar cap hit, than you have a worst untradeable contract which the Habs would have TO ADD a 1st Rd pick to get rid of him.
