They don’t have to sign him at 6.1. Just cause the QO is 6.1, doesn’t mean it has to be that much. I’m sure they could come to an agreement under that $ amount. Also I feel like MTL won’t match, KK said he felt like he played his last game as a hab last year and CAR was already trying to trade for him.

It would have to be for longer term then. Because offering him 1 year for less than his QO would 100% result in him becoming an FA since he wouldn't ever accept a 1 year deal for less than his QO. This is a rather clever ploy by Carolina. It's obviously a huge overpay. But it does very much handcuff Bergevin, match it and you have an ugly problem next off season unless he somehow blows the doors off. If he's just an average player you have to either QO or give him more than he's worth on a longer term, like 5x5 or something like that. Maybe 2x5.5. there is a deadline to qualify RFA's as well and if you don't Qualify him he's FA.

I was referring to them giving him a longer term. Would be dumb for KK to take a 1 or 2 year deal for less than his QO. But yeah what I meant was that they don’t have to just settle for his QO. They can work out a longer deal.

Very clever play by CAR. I’m sure they know they can get KK on a deal below his QO if they have to. Also good for KK, he felt like he played his last game as a hab after getting healthied. So good on him for signing the OS. Wish more teams used them, allows for RFAs to have more leverage and options. Teams shouldn’t be mad if a GM uses the Offersheet system, it’s in the game and another way GMs can acquire players.

I think it would depend on his season. If he puts up 40 points and comes on more towards the end of the season, the team may be able to leverage him into a smaller show me deal for 2 years. Possibly get him at around 5 for 2 years. If he does better than maybe he gets a bigger deal. If he does poorly then you are in big trouble. He would just wait for the QO and either become an FA and look for a fresh start or he's making 6.1 million and have another year to try to build up value.
