This is exactly why it is a lose-lose to tender an OS. Massive overpay but the Habs are utterly screwed if they don't match. Plus the revenge that will happen.

Love the trolling to boot. Hope you all enjoy the last OS we ever see as a result tho.

Why are the Habs screwed if they don't match? They get a 1st and a third for an okay but not great young player.

Well this is really bad for Montréal. This season is fine enough, since there’s not a problem until Byron gets back, where we might need to waive a few people. Now since he has a $6.1 million QO next year, the habs are so screwed cap wise. They need to sign Suzuki and Kotkaniemi for likely $13 million or so combined, with only Ben Chiarot’s contract coming off the books.

But obviously given that the offer sheet happened, it’s a no-brainer to match it for the habs. It’s just unfortunate that our team will be messed up so much because of Bergevin’s naïveté in thinking that the Canes wouldn’t match Aho’s offer sheet.

For Jesperi, this is phenomenal. He’ll likely end up making $7.5 million more or so than he would have over the next 2 years.

No brainer to match? Dude isn't that good. If I'm Suzuki and Kotkaniemi gets 6 mil my ask starts at 8-8.5 as he's at least that much better

Wow, what a surprise! Makes sense for the Canes if it's just for 1 year at that price. My assumption is he'll sign a long term extension for much less money and Aho will move to the wing.

Why would Aho move to the wing? He's a better centre than the Habs have had in at least the last 15 years

How is Kotkaniemi worth 6 million? He is coming off 5 goals and under 30 points. And was healthy scratched in the playoffs.

He had essentially the same goal and point pace as Byron this year who everyone considers a cap dump at about half the pay. He's given pillow soft minutes as well.

I'm not hating on Kotkaniemi, seems like a solid enough young player but he's nowhere near this money. I think the biggest risk here is on Carolina if they let him go

He’s not worth the money right now, but you can’t lose him for that bad of a return. I’d rather overpay him for a year or two than lose him for a late 1st and a 3rd.

2C Jake evans or a desperate overpay for a centre don't sound particularly great as the alternatives my dude.

Eichel is going to miss a huge part of the season. They would need to give up their 1st round pick with little or no protections as part of the package to land him, and with Evans as your 2C you aren't making the playoffs in a division with Toronto, Tampa Bay, Florida, and Boston. Besides MTL doesn't really have many good prospects that might interest Buffalo. I'd take Norlinder but beyond that you'd need a huge value boost and that name is Caufield or Suzuki - which would either be a non-starter or would tank the Habs even more

6 million for a guy who scores 5 goals for 20 points last season Yet refused to give Alex Nedeljkovic half that

Or even Dougie Hamilton a bit more

I suppose. Donato is still out there. They could likely have a guy like Henriques pretty cheap. Dvorak I don't suspect would cost much more than the 1st and 3rd

And frankly Kotkaniemi has been a 30 point player through his NHL career. He really isn't a #2 C yet.

Why can't you lose him for that return? He has upside, but he also has a reasonable likelihood that he is never more than an okay 3c. I think getting stuck paying a 2-3 million dollar player 6 million is the biggest risk.

KK equals Yakupov or another top pick from the Habs history, Galchy.

Getting a 1st and 3rd is probably more than what he is worth on the trade market. On the trade market he is worth another floundering young star.

Kapanen who has put up better numbers and gets paid in the 3 million range only netted the Leafs a 1st and garbage.

You get a 1st and a 3rd and then he's a UFA. I'd take the picks in a heartbeat.

What are you talking about? Kotkaniemi is still 4 years away from UFA eligibility.

Kotkaniemi will play wing in the Canes until Staal or/and Trocheck leave.

He's a UFA, unless he's given a qualifying offer that is at least as much as this year's contract. No way. Not worth it.
