This blueline still doesn't win the cup unfortunately, we need to add another really good defenseman at TDL. Refer to my last two posts for suggestions.

I think the reason the leafs got Kampf was to be the 3rd line center. I think Kerfoot will start on the 2nd line LW. imo

They can't afford to resign him. They let to many guys walk as Ufa's and leaf fans are sick of getting nothing for players, especially JVR who they could have gotten at least a first rounder a top prospect and a good roster player.

Just keep him.
Its like renting from yourself.
And gives Sandin time to develop.

So many leaf fans really miss the days of having a terrible defence with no depth. May as well trade Brodie and Muzzin as well.

They can make it work. It will take some creativity but Rielly is not replaceable

No he was terrific and an absolute beast in the playoffs but leaf fans are often absolutely stupid.

Defence isn't the issue. It's just timing now. They have the core, they have the defence and now it needs to come together in the playoffs. TO could win the Jennings and still half this site would say they need defence.

So what do you when someone in the top 4 goes down? I certainly don't want Dermott playing top 4 minutes and unless, it is Rielly going down, Sandin ain't going to be playing in the top 4 either. Leafs defense is good, 7th best last year in the league. But we have gone down twice when losing Muzzin. Also our big 4 has to put it together at some point, we have added nice pieces around them, we literally just need an upgrade on Dermott to seriously be called contenders. I don't trust our current blue line in a series against Tampa, Boston or Florida.

Being panicked about the #6 defenceman is ridiculous

The Leafs lost two playoffs because of Muzzin going down and nobody being able to step in for him. I don't think it ridiculous at all to want to upgrade on Dermott and play Holl on the 3rd pair.

Strange how you want to get rid of 1.5m Dermot and think that a better replacement in this Vatannen signs for just 800,000.

So many Leaf fans think bottom enders from other teams are the answer to the Leafs playoffs success. I like your previous about the Leafs defence. Gee I could live for more 100 years, and two assumptions
that will still resonate on CapFriendly. "Leafs have a lousy defence" and "Ottawa should take on bad contracts so they can get to the cap floor."

Rielly is just a disaster defensively , but he’s been that way his entire career. Elite offensively, but not someone you want to put on the ice up a goal in the 3rd period.

They didn't lose two round because Muzzin went down. They lost both because they didn't score when they needed to. Saying one defenceman cost the series when they kept the opponent to 2 goals a game is connecting dots from two different pictures.

Yup, the leafs could win 15 playoff games by shutout and lose 4 games in the finals 1-0 and the same people on here would say they can't win with that defence.

Muzzin's stability on the backend cannot be understated. Without him we crumble. We don't spend as much time in the offensive zone don't generate as much offense it all has a domino effect. Muzzin is ELITE, thus why we missed him so badly. Also didn't help that Matthews and Marner couldn't score. Muzzin definitely impacts the games on both sides of the ice even if it doesn't always show in the point. Definitely not connecting the dots from different pictures here.

Don't understand this at all. Might as well have Biega or Dahlström there. Vatanen doesn't move the needle at all IMO.

That is just opinion and holds no reality. TO held the offensive edge in every game vs Montreal, losing Muzzin of course sucked but it didn't cost the team the series. Perhaps vs Columbus but even then it wasn't really the reason. Rielly's absence would be far greater a loss but fans just don't really get it.

Your point us just as much of an option as my point. Leafs were god awful in game seven without Muzzin. And they weren't much better in game 6 once he was gone. I don't think anyone thinks that losing Rielly would be good in any way at all. It is all about finding someone that can replace him at a reasonable dollar amount. Ekholm could be that player as well as Sandin in a few years time.

The defence is very good. And I believe Liljegren, Sandin and Dermott all make strides this season. Giving us a very solid and dependable 7 defenceman.
