1.) He’s a LHD when we need a RHD.
2.) There’s no guarantees that he would stick around long term.

And how many small offensive Dmen do the Lightning have? None because you can't win the cup with them. Hedman is their most offensive Dman and he ain't exactly small. Dmen should help keep the puck out of the net and the Canucks don't have enough players doing that.

Size has nothing to do with offence. And looking at one teams blue line does not mean that small defensemen are bad. Girad In Colorado, Ellis in Nashville, Matt dumba/Jared spurgeon in Minnesota, Tory Krug/Matt Gryzlyk in boston, etc.

There are plenty of examples of teams with great blue lines where a smaller player is on their top pair. Hughes’s offensive abilities more than offset his size.

If your goal is to import everything the defense on the blue line, you should be looking to dump Myers, not hughes

And how many Stanley cups have those players won? Krug played 2 games as a rookie in 2011. Myers was -8 last year, Hughes was -24. That doesn't look like his offensive prowess offset his defensive shortcomings.

Boston went to the finals in 2019, Nashville in 2016. Too early to say for Colorado. Minnesota never put together a good enough forward group to compete, but that doesn’t mean their d-core was bad. Clearly, you can build a contender with small defenseman in big roles, provided they are good defensemen.

Hughes is 10 years younger than Myers. Myers was far more permissive 5 on 5 than Hughes was. Hughes heavily outproduced Myers. The choice should be obvious which one to dump
